I wonder where they got that 991 milibars from? Also this system looks weak.

The fact that the plane did not find that broad 80nm wide ring of convection overnight is a good sign that Irene may be developing today. Winds should now be able to spiral into a tighter center as the day progresses. But Irene is clearly not going to affect the east U.S. coast.

while I agree that this is likely to stay offshore, the GFS has again butchered the 500mb forecast, even after the dropsondes. The 12 hour forecast from last evening already had the ridge offshore, when it is clear that this is not the case based upon the obs. Still some chance to make a close pass to the Cape

That is not the scheduled flight, maybe a training mission. Maximum winds for that flight were 55 knots. The scheduled flight just sent this in:

URNT11 KNHC 131659 CCA
97779 16484 70320 71100 15200 07021 17138 /2539
40420
RMK AF308 0409A IRENE OB 05 CCA

32N 71.1W...surface winds 20 knots. That plane is now on its inbound NW leg.

That's the highest wind reported by the first flight...located SE of the center...64 knots.

NW quad, the second plane. They are now entering the center.

By the way, the NHC 11 AM position was too far north by 0.3 degrees, but motion in the past 2 hours has been almost due north.
