What Was The Most Impressive Hurricane on Imagery?

#1 Postby MiamiensisWx » Fri Aug 12, 2005 4:49 pm

Which hurricane do think was the most impressive-looking hurricane based on satellite imagery and how well the storm was organized/how strong?

For me, I'd have to say Isabel in 2003. Isabel - during most of her strongest periods - had a very well-developed eyewall (indicative of the most powerful, best-organized {or "classic"} systems), good outflow (necessary for development) and a doughnut-shaped eyewall (also often a key element of the strongest, toughest systems - e.g., Andrew in 1992 as well). Isabel was also in a favorable area for development and developed at a good pace. For these reasons, I think Isabel was one of the best "classic" hurricanes although there have been many others worth considering.

I'd have to give a mention to Allen in 1980. It was VERY large (the cloud structure covered almost the entire GOM) and very impressive.

As for the ones on the list, Isabel was one of the most impressive.

Edit: I was about 2 mintues too late, jax. Story of my life.

Isabel - first ever time that a star pattern was recorded in the eye of a strong hurricane (5 smaller vortices visible within eye)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Donna should not be listed. Done occurred in late Aug/early Sept of 1960. TIROS was launched on 1 April, but was operational for only 78 days. The replacement, TIROS-II, didn't launch until 23 Novmeber, leaving Donna in the dark.

Great photos of Gilbert, jax!

I noticed that about Isabel's eye as well, WindRunner. Really amazing.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS THREAD!!! :notworthy:

Way too hard for me. Mitch 1998, Isabel 2003, Gilbert 1988 were all extremely impressive to me. But had to vote Mitch, Isabel I have few sat pics saved on my computer, and Gilbert occurred before I was even born!

Half the names dont deserve to be an option. Jeanne,Keith??? I think Mitch was the best looking, followed by Isabel, then Gilbert.

You're welcome, wxmann_91!

senorpepr,
I listed Donna because I saw an image of her. Also, based on info on Donna as an impressive hurricane, I included her. Sorry if you may think I'm wrong, or if I am...

Thanks for telling me, though!

Know if you have a image of Donna then post it. I wonder who had the satellite up there. Because as Serp said we did not.

I believe the imagery you've seen was radar.

Look familiar?

Regardless, it still was an impressive system...
