About Air Force vs. NOAA missions -- the NOAA Gulfstream IV (4) jet can fly very high, up to 50,000 feet, and it has all the equipment for collecting data from the digital GIS dropwindsondes. By sampling the atmosphere around and far out in front of the center, they get data for the models. It's not used for penetrating the storm center, as far as I know.

This is typical -- that aircraft was purchased for research missions and this kind of downstream and wide-area atmospheric data collection. The Air Force hurricane hunters are the ones who do the regular center fixes, get pressure and wind data in the storm.

Hope that provides some info for you.

I've realized what you're talking about now... one of the WP-3s is flying in Irene as well.

I don't know it for a fact, but it could be doing equipment checks / prep work for the RAINEX experiment/study ( http://www.ofps.ucar.edu/rainex/ ). (Derek, if you're around, fact-check me, please).

So yes, it is a special case as it is there for research purposes, not necessarily operational reasons.

There are no RAINEX ops today, not even any test flights. The project does not begin until Monday

Yes, that is what the OPS POD indicated...

http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cgi-bin/catalo ... e_day.html

However, that was the only reason could think of for the NOAA3 to be flying around in that vicinity and not taking dropsonde obs or anything... hmm...

Oops - I was over on another board - thanks KeyLargo for answering 4REAL's question.

As Derek Ott said, the G-IV is perhaps out there for other research missions (many don't know that the NOAA aircraft are "rented" out by many different research organizations through the year), though I'll guess and say that the Gulfstream is also providing the dropsonde support for tonight's 00Z model run.
