Oil facts
Small dusky sharks caught within 3 days either side of a full moon will have LARGE pure white livers. The livers are removed (shark eaten- yum) and hung out in the sun to melt. The oil is collected and placed in a wax sealed glass jar and hung on an eastern facing wall to catch the morning sun. After a few days. this new oil will separate with 1/8th milky white bottom sedement and the rest crystal clear. As storms form, move and intensify (or weaken) the white sedement will form patterns (much like a lava lamp) within the clear part. Different patterns mean different things eg. A small skinny spiral, like an inverted tornado indicates a weak system or forming system somewhere within 1000 miles. If a well pronounced banking on one side of the jar appears (usually in the dirrection of the storm), is an indication of unsettled weather within 3 days) When the oil goes completely white (usually with a thin layer of clear on top), a major weather event is imminent.
This has been studied extensivly in Bermuda, and the most credible reasoning is that a shark will feel sick when weather affects his liver and will retreat to greater depths to protect themselves from predators, thus protecting them from the savage seas.

isn't going near Bermuda. Again the center of this thing is on the SW side of the convection, forget about the mid-level circulation. This 11 pm discussion is holding out on the fact that that the ridge buiding near Bermuda may retrograde to the west. The northward movement exhited by Irene may have mostly to do with the fact that the ULL near the Bahamas was pushing her to the NW. SHe'll be turning toward the west tomorrow night.

Many West Indians have various methods from observing the natural
world that they use as predictors in hurricane seasons and quite often are correct.
Contrary to immediately assuming something like this is not in any way believable, for those that used really rude, immature comments (and incredibly bad attempts at humor) to indicate that, why not study it or at least appreciate the thinking behind it? You trust the *science* of weather, even when the very best in the business admit it is not always dependable!
Arrogance (based on ignorance) is really tiresome.

Will that shark oil tell you where the storm is going to hit? How strong?
Sorry meant to add-- not making fun of you at all. I grew up listening to wives tales (I am spanish) so we have our own that we know about. I think that was interesting to read.
