Have Maryland and Delaware never been hit directly?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Have Maryland and Delaware never been hit directly?

I'm surprised to read that. How unlikely must be for some states to never be touched by storms that even Canada has a bigger landfall probability.

simple geography. north carolina blocks from the south and it would be unlikely for a storm to have any reason to turn west at that altitude as a storm up there would be there because its swinging around the ridge and being drug out to sea by a trough.

thats why its unlikely/rare.

I don't recall Maryland beaches ever being directly hit by a hurricane, I don't have any records that specify Maryland coastal waters being directly hit. There have been some close calls just offshore from the Maryland beaches in the past, but they never scored a direct hit.

The anomaly of anomalies... TS in 1943

Similar, but further south was Danielle of '92

You can check it out for yourself by going to

http://hurricane.csc.noaa.gov/hurricanes/viewer.html

and plugging in a zip code like 21842 (Ocean City, MD)

Don't try to look at the entire history all at once... far too messy, but it's managable if you look at it in 25 year chunks or so...

Delaware and Marland are in the same type of position North Florida/Georgia is in from the viewpoint that both are in an area where lots off hurricanes pass by, but neither are directly along the high probability paths...

Maryland's been either hit or indirectly affected considerably back around 1931 I believe...?? Maybe a CAT 1 0r 2 ....It cut an isthmus through Ocean City. Changed the landscape....A friend' s mother was there at the time. I Have to check the graphics.
