It's really just not that big of a deal, despite the way people seem to react. Let's do some math:
Say you drive a car that gets 20 mpg (which is quite low) and you drive 20,000 miles per year (which is quite high). You would use 1,000 gallons of gasoline per year. At $3.00 per gallon, that's still only a $3000 per year expenditure (about $250 per month). While annoying, this is hardly a crippling expense. And remember, this is for a gas guzzler being driven a lot of miles in a year.

Or you could drive less. Or do away with some luxuries (even the poorest in this country have many luxuries).
$3.00 a gallon gas has been needed for a long time to get Americans to think about our extreme wastefulness as a nation.

What are we supposed to walk 30 miles to work...Maybe we should just quit are jobs...
I tell you what I'm not a waistfull person and am struggling to make ends meet.....What luxuries are you talking about. I know I don't have any..
You actually stating it for our own good we pay $3.00 a gallon... I think I will end this before I thorw my monitor though the wall....
senorpepr wrote:PK does make a great point. We have been spoiled for many years. Very few nations pay as little as we do and they go just fine. Matter of fact, there are several countries that pay more than we do (sometimes three times as much) and still have a better economy than the US.
With that said, I personally agree that the instant high in prices are pretty bogus. However, it's not to be unexpected. Obviously gasoline will not drop significantly in the future. I'd be pretty surprised if it does drop below $2 again.
We, as a nation and as a world, need to focus ahead in the future. We've made such great strides forward in technology yet very little advances in automobile fuels. Instead of focusing on alternative fuels and/or better fuel economy, we're trying to get bigger and wasteful. (For example, the explosive rate of SUV sales)
With that in mind... here's a beautiful picture I thought ya'll will enjoy. http://photos.aberration.org/pics/01122 ... rgia_s.jpg
