They tend to be in a place in the alphabet such that they normally form around very active and favorable times of year.

They're going to run out of "I" names soon if the retirement trend continues.

Isidore was more fun than bad. I copped a day and a half off of work with storm pay. I saved one of my neighbor's from having her apartment flooded by digging a channel through her yard. I got drunk too :D

A lot of times I* would be the end of the season. Long term average of named storms was something like 9.6 per year last time I noticed that statistic. So in nearly 50% of seasons, we won't even have an I storm. But I agree with you that in a few of the last seasons, we've had some memorable ones and some notable landaflls (including Isidore '02 and Ivan for me). It's bizarre that we set the I storm record by almost 2 weeks.

Chances are they'll be retiring some names pretty far down the alphabet when this season's over. JMO

If Irene becomes a bad storm and gets retired, that will leave Isaac as the only non-retired I name on the Atlantic name lists.

However, Isaac did start the streak of major "I" hurricanes by reaching Category 4 in 2000.

If Irene reached hurricane strength, she'll be the 11th consecutive I hurricane. The last "I" storm not to reach hurricane status was Iris in 1989.

1990: Hurricane Isidore (Category 2)
1991: none
1992: none
1993: none
1994: none
1995: Hurricane Iris (Category 2)
1996: Hurricane Isidore (Category 3)
1997: none
1998: Hurricane Ivan (Category 1)
1999: Hurricane Irene (Category 2)
2000: Hurricane Isaac (Category 4)
2001: Hurricane Iris (Category 4)
2002: Hurricane Isidore (Category 3)
2003: Hurricane Isabel (Category 5)
2004: Hurricane Ivan (Category 5)

Interesting fact: Hurricane Isabel was the first female hurricane to reach Category 5 status in the Atlantic since Hurricane Anita in 1977.

The reason why the "I" names have been notorious is probably because conditions were ripe for strong development when they formed. Also, we usually see (during an "average" season) an "I" storm during the more active part(s) of the Atlantic Hurricane/Cape Verde Seasons.

For example:
ISABEL - An African system that came off the African shores as a wave on September 1st, 2003, which is around the heart of the active part of the Cape Verde Season. Track and general direction was typical of some of the typical "superstorm", or powerful, Cape Verde systems. It strengthened onward and reached Category Five status on September 11th - right in the prime time of Cape Verde mayhem. In addition, however, 2003 was an active season, seeing 21 systems that reached status as a tropical depression or higher. Of those, 16 were named systems. The three strongest systems that year were Kate, Fabian and Isabel. Isabel and Kate formed in September, while Fabian formed in late August.

Just my view from data, though...

Alright, breakdown...

2006 - Isaac, I can see this as another fishy
2007 - Ingrid, leaning towards TS on this one
2008 - Ike, not a strong name
2009 - Ida, ugh I don't like the sound of this one
2010 - Igor, won't make an impressive debut at all

But that's just guesswork for now.

Other potential "I" female names could be Ilene and Ivory.

Hawaiian names are out as they are reserved for CENPAC. Isis is already in use in EPAC.

Bringing back a really old post. Except for 2007's Ingrid dud, the trend has really continued...

2006 Isaac (Didn't do much but still was a hurricane)
2007 Ingrid (Weak tropical storm that did nothing)
2008 Ike (Enough said)
2009 Ida (Most destructive storm of a slow year)
2010 Igor (Very strong storm and worst in Newfoundland in decades)

Does that mean Irene will be bad in 2011?

I think I and F names are the ones that usually are notorious.

But the thing is, we didn't really start getting crazy I storms until 2001 with Iris, and then we have four consecutively retired I names: Iris, Isidore, Isabel, and Ivan. And then we had Ike four years after Ivan.

There are a few I names they can use:

Female: Ilsa, Irma
Male: Ian (I'm STILL positive on this), Ichabod, Iggy, Irving
