Anyone know anything about heel spurs.

I have been having pain in my foot and into my ankle for several weeks now. Many years ago I broke this ankle and had to have surgery. Does anyone have this problem or know anything about it?

they hurt... they feel like a spur is in your heel...

As a matter of fact, I DO! Being a retired meat cutter/mgr. I spent HOURS, COUNTLESS hours on concrete (12-16 hours a DAY, 6 DAYS A WEEK) and NOW Law Enforcement officer, I spend a LOT of time AGAIN on my feet.

I had surgery almost 2 years ago now for the spurs on my left heel.....you don't have to have surgery but if they are as severe as mine were, you'll NEED it. First round of treatment is Cortizone Shots and let me tell ya, those shots made a 6'3", 265lb man CRY, YES...they HURT that bad. I had 3 shots (the limit for Cortizone) and still no relief from the pain. They go in and cut the tendon around the spur to let it slide over the spur.....the surgery takes one hour, recovery time, 8 WEEKS!!

Shots in my heel. Ouch. Surgery...8 weeks recovery time. Now that would be interesting with three young children.

I had spur surgery on both my feet many years ago. On the first one my doctor made me a soft bandage support every few weeks for 3 months until I was no longer working (sustitute teacher). Then he did surgery. Took a full week before I could stand on it at all and another couple before I could grocery shop. Second one, same deal but Ibuprofin had just come out. 800 mg everyday. I has walking on it in 2 1/2 days and shopping at K-mart in 7. Just be sure you check out your podiatrist really, really well. Some are very, very good and some suck. "Suck" is on the verge of being a naughty word for me just so you will understand how important it is. Daughter got a bad one and had to have surgery two more times.

I know what you mean... I have an extra bone in my foot that needs to come out.... I mean it, unfortunately my left foot will be either numb or shooting pain... the X ray really didn't tell much, but that there was a bone problem.... no #*@& sherlock, I could have told the podiatrist that one.... I couldn't persuade the doc to get an MRI of my left foot... its been a total mess with the podiatrist. I already have arch inserts in my shoes from arch problems, now this oh boy.... Everyone in my family has the extra bone and NO ONE has a problem with it. Here is what makes this situation worse, I have a bulging disk between L1 and L2, that would explain why in that same foot, that somedays I have NO feeling in the left side of the foot... the Neurosurgeon is already aware of that situation.

I know forsure that when I get back to WI I'm finding a new podiatrist.

Lets see, Naproxen doesn't work, Ibubrofin doens't work, Aleve works a little. Basically, I live everyday with pain, somedays its unbearable.

My father had a spur and wouldn't consider the surgery. They made a plastic insert for his shoes and he never had any more problems with the pain from the spur.

Your right, make DANG sure you research the sawbones your gonna use to treat this condition. The 8 week recovery time was longer on mine because I spend so much time on my feet, I too, like MomH was up and walking in 2 days (on crutches for a week).....you CAN get back on your feet in that time frame it's just taking a chance that you MIGHT goof up the surgery and trust me, you DON'T want to have to go through it twice!! I can STILL feel the shots No...not really, just THINKING about it makes my foot hurt again!

Cookiely, I had those inserts made too but as I said, I let my condition go WAY too long before I did anything about it!

I had a problem with heel spurs in both feet. I didn't want surg and had heard about the painful shots. A nurse friend of mine said her Podiatrist told her to wear clogs. I tried it and the pain resolved in about 2 weeks. I still wear clogs--especially when I was working on my feet a lot in a hospital. My favorite shoes are clogs. Just avoid the kind with the lip around the heel. My spurs were not real bad so if you have a severe problem it may not help but is sure worth trying.
