Western Atlantic Tropical Summary - WATS UP on august 3, 2005

<img src="http://www.diamondheadweather.com/wats20050803.jpg">

The Western Atlantic gave birth to Tropical Depression #8 yesterday,
surprising most people that watch the tropics. TD #8 was upgraded to
Tropical Storm Harvey today, becoming the earliest 8th named storm on
record.

Two weak tropical waves in the Caribbean Sea are not expected to
develop. Behind them is another large area of dry air.

Harvey is only a threat to Bermuda, and down the road, shipping lanes.
I do not expect Harvey to become stronger than a tropical storm.

Elsewhere, an upper level low near 20N 55W and another ULL near
31N 42W persist over the open Atlantic.

I hadn't seen the E atl WV pic yet - that's a good bit of dry air getting pulled in from the south, it goes all the way back to the keys! Just shows you the sphere of influence of these things . . .

It looks like the wave at 20N 50W is beginning to move into the dry area. It will be interesting to see if the thunderstorm activity can hold together. I guess the dry air is going to be with us a little while longer.
