FIVE YEARS OF SOBRIETY

#1 Postby george_r_1961 » Fri Jul 29, 2005 11:33 pm

August 1 will mark 5 years of sobriety for me. As some of you know im a recovering alcoholic and was heavy drinker for many years. On that summer day 5 years ago I woke up with an hangover..nothing unusual back then..and decided enough was enough. Gone were the nights in the bars or at parties. I began spending more time with my father and developed other interests. With the money I saved by not drinking I was able to purchase a decent car and my first computer and was able to pursue the only real hobby Ive ever had..weather. No more hangovers; no more scrounging up money to buy beer with. Ive made new friends..both in my town and here and at storm2k. I have returned to being the hard dependable worker I was before I started drinking and am now the highest ranking non management employee at my job. My idea now of "going out" is hitting the little Italian joint near my home for a nice salad and an order of tortellini  There is no "secret" to stopping drinking nor is there a magic pill. If the desire is there the person will stop. Period. I didnt do it all by myself either. I needed help. My new friends ..here at storm2k and in my town, will be more than happy to kick my moon if I even think id drinking again. Talking about a support system LOL. Well I thought Id share this with you. Over and Out :)

Congrats George!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow 5 years of sobriety! It takes a special person to recognize they are an alcoholic and an even more special one to take that first step and the many steps that follow. And you George are a special person! Happy Sobriety!

Good job man, I think you're an example of what's right about people. People can fall, and people can stumble, but with friends and the right spirit, they can win against anything.

Excellent job!!! Most of the people in my family were very heavy drinkers so I never quite developed the "thirst" for it, if you will, with the exception of a bit of binge drinking in college. More power to you! Too bad there are not more people like you in the world.

CONGRATS "ALL" of you!! I went through a *period* in my life that I don't REMEMBER, seriously, the Ol' Snowman "Just about bought the Farm!" I still enjoy my beer in the evening "3 bottles of MGD MAX!" No more, no less than 3 and the heck of it is, I REMEMBER everything NOW!

I just made 14 months, and I had no idea we had so many 2Kers in recovery!
Maybe there is some correalation between loving 'canes and the Program. Step 13- Continuing to track storms and ignore the MM5, we became ready to evacuate or board up, and always kept a watch on the NOGAPS. :hehe: :sun:

I too had the same problem, but this started in the NAVY. I got into a lot of trouble in there. going on 3 years here. PM me if you want to talk more, as I would like to do the same..
