My problem is remembering whether it's one R and two B's, or two R's and one B.

There's also the way I've heard it

kara BEAN

... edited to spell it more like how I hear it. Or maybe pronounce it... lol ... or both.

Just add a strong southern accent to first suggestion of how to say it and you got a southern twang way of saying it.

lol ... I think that's where my "kara BEAN" comes from. I'm not real good at figurin out how to spell stuff the way I hear it... and after livin in NY, NC, GA, AL and Texas ... I've heard some strange strange pronunciations. (I was the official "translator" when we watched "The Waterboy" at my friends' house)

I have no idea whether one is right or not...Being as the Caribbean comes from the word Carib...as in the original native...but then, what is the *right* way to say Carib? Can't ask them...we made sure of that! I hear it both ways and say it both ways...
I hope we hear more thoughts on this as I've never heard a definitive answer yet.

Online Wikepedia dictionary says this: (in a list of words with disputed pronunciations!)

(1) [kæ?.?.?bi.?n] (2) [k?.?r?.bi.?n]

Most dictionaries list both pronunciations as acceptable, but PPP shows a 91-9% preference for (1). The Disneyland ride (and related entertainment offerings) "Pirates of the Caribbean" is pronounced with (1). It is sometimes suggested to use (1) for the noun (as in Pirates of the Caribbean) and (2) for the adjective (a Caribbean island), but there is no etymological reason to support such a distinction.

Yeah, used to hear those on TWC - but, they seem to be getting better. Heck, even Tommy and Rhonda mess things up on WLOX. Like mispronouncing "Beauvoir" and "Reynoir" streets in BA-LOX-EE. And they LIVE here!!

Well, quite frankly, the way Coast folks pronounce those as "boove-wah" and "ray-ner" does not appear to be correct, but hey, they're the ones living here so what they call it is what they call it.

I used to call Gautier, MS "Goater" to antagonize my pals from there. It worked.
