I can't remember if this has been done before and if it has I apologize. But I was curious who all has been through major hurricanes and which one.
I have been through Frederic, Elena in 1985 but didn't get the worst of it just the annoyance of it, Ivan, and on almost Dennis but was spare at the last minutes or hours I should say.
What major storms have you been through?

I'm showing my age, but, Donna (1960) - missed my first day of school; Belle (1976); Andrew (1992) - lost my house in that one and sustained an injury; Irene (1999); Frances (2004) - the building was vibrating so much I thought it was going to fall down - 18 hours of high winds!
And moderate fringe effects from:
David (1979)
Elena (1985)
Kate (1985)
Erin (1995)
Georges (1998) - sustained another injury in that one.
Floyd (1999)
Jeanne (2004)

Me too, when it comes to majors. Majors for me would be Camille(in P'cola area) and Alicia(direct hit). The list of storms/hurricanes I have experienced is so long parts of it are very foggy(no comments from the peanut gallery-wait till you've been around as long as I have!). Suffice it to say the first I remember was in 1958(Flossy).

Several cat ones here in east central Florida. The closest to a major would be Jeanne. However, we did not experience major hurricane force winds here in Melbourne. I think 100 mph in gusts at the highest from Jeanne in this area. The cat ones were David, Erin, and Irene. Floyd stayed offshore and I think the highest wind gusts were just under Hurricane force along our coast. Probably was a hurricane gust somewhere though. Frances was a Cat 2, but in this area we experienced Cat 1 conditions. With that said, we experienced those cat 1 conditions with Frances for a very long time.

Well I haven't been through no Cat 3 or higher but I have been through 2 hurricanes that were Major considering where I live! Here in Maine we don't get to many hurricanes the last one we got was back in 1991 which was Hurricane Bob and it was a cat 1 and then before that in 1985 we had Hurricane Gloria which was a cat 1 or 2!

Near my house at opa locka airport they registered gusts over 200 before their equipment failed.

There was one squal line that was the second strongest part of Andrew that went though opa locka. It wasn't as strong though as the two cells that were spinning around the eye... one that wiped out country walk.
Andrew still is an enigma. Some of the destruction witnessed in Andrew has never been seen before except in some of the huge tornados of the midwest. And Becuase of Andrew's design... he was spawning incredibly more tornado's than the average hurricane.
I will forever remember that night. With every bang, creek, and howl... my stomache would fall... as i am feeling the second story of CBR house rock... What it takes to make a sold structure rock is just amazing.
Many of my friends went south.. and had to hold doors shut against hurricane winds... or huddle in hallways with matress' over their heads as Andrew tore their roof off, and ripped the house to pieces. That day driving down their with the family's trucks full of supplies for people... that site was unbelievable. Entire housing developments... with only concrete foundations left.
I hope we never have another one of this anywhere... but especially in a major city.
