I bet the reason why they have such strick laws (meaning dumb ones to) is because if they didn't property value would go down and it wouldn't be such a nice neighborhood if it isn't already.

Property rates in Florida are soaring and no one appraises property in the middle of a hurricane's aftermath.

When I was in the military and out in the field(maneuvers) we would dig a hole just large enough for the generator(allow a little room on all sides). It would cut the noise down to zip.

They're noisy only if they're outside and/or don't have a muffler.

Well, if 'ya run it INSIDE, death will preclude the need to have it for the next day...

Ah yes. Palm Beach County. The land of hanging chads, moronic leadership and a pill popping world famous talk show host.

But if a Cat 4 hit there, despite all their money, they'd be the first to demand unlimited FEMA loans....

Now I have heard everything! I bet if a storm came through the area they would change their laws very quickly.

Yes, I know. I'll tell you one thing, I will probably get fined because I will run mine around the clock. I am a conservative politically but I will fight this if it becomes a problem. :flag:

If a storm hit they would just lift the restriction. We had big FEMA diesel generators running here night and day after Charley keeping the sewers running...

What is interesting is that all of the other jurisdictions in this area including Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Wellington and Palm Beach County don't have these restrictions. This is a small average income suburban town with families and middle income households.

This is a perfect example of what happens when you get a few guys in power in a small town that come from some NYC neighborhood. They think that they can shoe horn their ideas that they grew up with in a DENSELY populated area into normal American society.

I can not believe that they would enforce this law after a hurricane. The police are going to be busy enough with real laws, and as long as you are nice to your neighbors (invite them over to watch the game, sit in your AC, have a cold beer), they are not going to complain.

When I have been without power (not a whole lot), and had a generator, I did not run it 24 hours a day (I didn't have neighbors close enough to complain), but I honestly found it hard to sleep with the noise (plus always worried about them overheating, catching fire, or something like that). I would shut it off around midnight (or when I went to bed) and start it up in the morning to make coffee, take a shower (well water), and that kind of thing.

And honestly, they are not going to take away your generator, they are just going to fine you and tell you to shut it off (until they leave), so I would ask what the fine is going to be and ballance the cost of paying a fine or two, or sweating, having food rotting in the fridge, drinking warm beer, not being able to watch any important storm related info on the TV... I might be willing to pay $50 a day for those comforts.

That's just idiotic. Just out of curiousity though, are there exemptions for people who require electricity for medical equipment? Or were they too dumb to think of that?

Man, they better not enforce that law here in Jupiter (palm beach county), we have an old Generac that my in-laws gave us, works like a charm but it's LOUD!

Barb,

That's the thing. It's just here in Royal Palm Beach (You know, right next to the acreage). It's not county wide...just here. The're not even this strict over on Palm Beach where Trump lives!! They can run their generators any time there is an emergency. In fact many of those mega buck homes have had stand-by generators for years. This rule applies only to our little town. :yayaya:

I live just north of there and know it is nuts some of the restrictions they have in Royal Palm. Saw this debate going on and thought surely they wouldn't do such a thing. Let's see them try to tell people when they are without electricity they can't use them at night and see how many listen! No thought what so ever as to food spoilage, those with health problems, etc. It is for the birds!

The rules here in Boca Raton are crazy as well, we lost a 18 foot tree in hurricane frances and the homeowners association forced us to replace it with a tree of atleast 14 feet or we would be fined
