Well.. I had an interesting day lol..
1st and foremost.. from now until 7/26... If I wanna work OT I can because inventory is coming..
2nd.. I am kinda a little mad but at the same time feeling very motivated.. Here is why..
I spoke with my store manager today because I wanted to talk to him because my long term goal is to become a manager of my own Wal Mart store 1 day..
Well.. He seems to like my goal.. and managed to tell me that you have to have good leadership qualities and that I'm a great associate and yada yada yada..
Sounds harmless.. Here's the part that got me thinking.. He also stated that in his 7 months since he came over from Cali.. he "has yet to see me show the qualities of being a leader"..
This angered me.. but also made me motivated.. Anger because I know I am the #1 buggy man and just about everyone in the store knows it.. Motivated because this is now my chance to prove to him by saying to myself.. "OK, manager.. you don't think I'm a good leader.. time to show you" So now my newest short term goal is to show him as well as other managers that I can be a leader..
I WILL be a store manager 1 day.. I WILL achieve the goal.. Just I know it'll take work..

ask
Hi John,
Glad to see you are still plugging away. Suggestion: Why not ask the manager for help with a "development plan" . This should include skill sets you need to develop for the long term as well as outline possible "next steps" in your career path in the short term. He should be able to tell you what jobs will help you get to your long term goal so that you don't waste your time with assignments that may not help in the long run.
Also, once you ask for this kind of help, understand that you are letting management know that you are willing to be held to a higher standard. Feedback will be more critical and harder to take. You have to make that work for you too. One of the things I look at as a manager is how people react to critical review. THAT'S the stuff that separates the men from the boys so to speak. You are doing good. Keep it up!

Good advice there. Anything constructive that you can get from your superiors is a plus. And any indication to them that you want to learn more will set you apart. But yes, you will be raising the bar for yourself, so to speak.
Just a couple other things: don't confuse management with leadership. Yes, your manager may be a "good manager," but that doesn't necessarily translate to good leadership. For him to just say "you don't have the qualities" without telling you what those qualities are would usually make me question his leadership right off the bat, UNLESS he was trying to get a response out of you and start the conversation, in which case it could be an indication of good leadership tactics. Jury is still out on that one. I would go back to him and see what he says. If he is constructive, makes some good recommendations to you, definitely listen. If he is a good leader, he was probably disappointed that you didn't follow up.
Leadership is a quality above management. Among other things, it involves knowing the right way to manage (or lead) people. There really is no single definition of good or effective leadership. Just remember the saying, "Managers do things right. Leaders do the right things."

Our stores' inventory results are in..
We got a score of .66
That is apparently a good score, but 1/2 a point WORSE than my store did last year..
If any of you wonder what a good score or a bad score is.. I have been told a bad score is anything above 0.99
Scores of 1 or higher mean your store apparently has high loss and high shrinkage..
Here's a side note.. I worked 5 hrs in Domestics for OT on Tuesday night, and they turned out to be 1 OF THE BEST DEPARTMENTS!
Another 1 of our best depts was Shoes, which everyone feared wasn't going to be inventory ready.. I even went past the shoe dept right before I went home @ 11 on Tuesday night and it looked like it had been blown up.. LITERALLY lol..
Our top depts' for shrinkage {losses} were Electronics {that's a gimme lol} and believe it or not the other 2 were grocery {esp Frozen} and Dairy..
This is because of last year's hurricanes.. We had so much food to throw out from them.. that obviously becomes a loss..

Yes,not bad but its still a little short at .66.The grocery business is very hard place to move up in. I know I put in 15years at different places and its all the same.Watch those guys in the camera room they are not only looking for thief's but people who are not working even a 2 min chat with a co-worker can mean a job today but no job tomorrow.(Hint)A good friend of mine is a walmart manger,so trust me your beening watched.

Temp-work physical labor is the only work under other people I'd ever consider now (because, to me, it'd be like getting a gym work-out and getting paid for it).
I remember vending jumbo-dogs at the Metrodome, and stocking Christmas merchandise up in the warehouse rafters of a Target store are memorable experiences. We stockers loved whipping up those stuffed toys -- it didn't matter if you "missed" the other guy, because the product couldn't break -- so we'd sling the hell out of 'em!

It's not a very volatile stock, and arguably slightly below average price:Josephine96 wrote:Just thought I'd let anyone business savvy know that for the 2nd straight day.. Wal Mart stock closed over 50 $ a share.. 50.14 was the closing price today..

I just wanted to brag that effective.. 10/15.. I'll have my next raise..
I got my 1 year evaluation yesterday.. and it was nearly spotless.. I got a raise of the maximum {55 cents} so on 10/15.. my salary skyrockets from $7.05 to $7.60
The highlight of my eval, my strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths: My sheer enthusiasm, How well I keep the cart bay in tact {even during our busy rushes}. How well I work when I'm all alone {which my boss can't figure out lol}, Not afraid to ask for help when needed
Weaknesses: STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE THINKS! lol.. {that's actually what it said}.
and my other weakness.. I kinda like to talk to everybody even when I'm not on a break or a lunch lol.. My boss wants me to try to cut down on that..
Other than that.. Nearly a perfect eval. This will keep me the highest paid cart pusher on the block lol
