Hurricane Dennis Damage Estimates

#1 Postby recmod » Wed Jul 27, 2005 12:44 am

Last year, it seemed that officials were very eager to assign a price-tag of damage estimates to each hurricane. I noticed that, in some cases, a damage estimate was published in local media as early as the same day that a hurricane made landfall.

This year, I see a different trend. Not a single news source I have perused ever gave a damage estimate from Hurrricane Dennis. All I kept seeing were comparisons to last year's Ivan, but no definitive $$ amount assessed.

Well, after some more digging, I finally found some media websites that have given some estimate for Dennis' carnage:

From the Lancaster, PA newspaper site:

BERLIN (AP) - The total insured damage from Hurricane Dennis, which hit parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast over the weekend, will amount to between $3 billion and $5 billion, an insurance company estimated Monday.

The CNN Money website has this to say about Dennis:

Risk Management Solutions expects the hurricane to result in $1 billion to $5 billion in insured losses. That estimate includes insured losses from direct wind damage, inland rain and flooding, and factors in inflated repair costs after 2004's storms.

AIR Worldwide estimates a lower figure, in the range between $1 billion and $2.5 billion.

Another loss modeling firm, Eqecat Inc., came in with a significantly higher estimate of Dennis's cost -- with insured losses between $3 billion and $8 billion.

From Wikipedia:

Dennis caused at least 71 deaths in the United States and Caribbean, and caused $5-9 billion in damage, about half of it in the Caribbean. Damage was not as high as expected in the United States, mainly because Dennis was more compact and moved through quicker than initially forecast

I am willing to bet Dennis killed TEN TIMES that many people in Cuba alone.

Yep, the high cost was expected. Makes me wonder why so many people on this board have written Dennis off as being a dud. Any landfalling, major hurricane will cause alot of damage. It doesnt have to be a Cat 4 with 145mph winds to do damage, 120mph winds (even if their very localized) can do major damage.

The problem would be getting that bastion of freedom and truth to admit its actual losses.

Castro would never tell the truth about the hurricane damage

I'v been looking for a updated list of the most costly storms to hit the United states. But here is one...

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/E12.html

Another...
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastcost.shtml

In plus we had Charley at 14 billion,Ivan 13 billion,Frances at 8,860 billion,Jeanne at 6,500 billion.

So it go's
Andrew
Charley
Ivan
Hugo

I don't remember the rest. But as of right now Dennis hardly gets into the top 10.

Here is the report...

*Laff*! Didja know it's illegal now there to take photographs of hurricane damage?

If I may pose a hilarious false-dichotomy, there are two ways to learn about Cuba:

1. Learn about it in college from a professor with a Che Guevara poster on his office door.
2. Browse on over to http://www.therealcuba.com/

Hurricane Castro http://www.therealcuba.com/HurricaneCastro.htm
Can you believe that there are actually people who think Communism just needs to be given a "fair chance?" As if it and its sibblings have not already had enough chances around the world. What a trail of misery, sorrow, and tears... Let FREEDOM ring, not tyranny, censorship, and oppression.

Of course I believe it -- after all, I live in a culture of thieves who routinely troop to the polls expressly to select their preferred agents in the matter of redistributing my property without my consent in order to service their "needs" (in accordance with all the very best irrationalizations and ethical depravity of Marxism) ranging from such worthy matters as the NEA and the NWS (to name but two of hundreds of alphabet-soup "necessities" piled up on my back). Castro's basic short-coming as a tyrant is that he is incompetent; a competent tyrant removes himself from the scenes and orchestates two "competing" political parties, and ensures a productive economy so he'll have plenty of swag to steal. Castro? He's the moron that kills the "golden goose".

But....I yammer.... :yayaya:

Matt,

you have the DOUBLE the insured damage to get the total damage
Dennis if the insured losses are 5 billion, is the 4th costliest hurricane ever in US history. If theya re 8 billion (which I doubt), then it is the second

one other factor that must be considered, was the damage to the Miami area. Yes, we had some decent damage here from the severe storms and tornadoes from the outer feeder bands

Dennis caused 2 billion in Jamaica (do a google search and you'll find the article) and I heard at least 3 billion in Cuba.

And according to NHC storm analysis, Ivan caused more damage (in billions) than Charley.
