Earliest Named Storm Question

#1 Postby wafbwx » Sun Jul 24, 2005 8:44 pm

Does anyone have a comparison of the earliest named storm records set this year and what year they surpassed? In other words, we've got a record for the earliest 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th named storms this year (I believe)...what records did each of those storms break?

Thanks!

Wasn't there a storm that formed in late December and lasted through early January? That would either set a record for earliest formed storm or latest formed storm.

They didn't break the records. Mtm4319, in 1954, the second Hurricane Alice formed on Dec. 30th, but it wasn't discovered until January of 1955.

By modern naming techniques, though, it would have been the next available letter.

Interesting how two storms formed in May in 1887.

And no, I don't think there has been a TC that lasted from late Dec-New year's Day. That would be pretty cool though.

Here is the data I have archived...

It is slightly different from the data above, because this data only reflects the date that the storm reached tropical storm status whereas the above data reflects when the tropical storm first developed into a depression. Therefore, this should be more appropriate.

01 - 19 JAN 1978
02 - 17 MAY 1887
03 - 11 JUN 1887
04 - 07 JUL 1995 (05 JUL 2005*)
05 - 17 JUL 1997 (12 JUL 2005*)
06 - 04 AUG 1936 (21 JUL 2005*)
07 - 07 AUG 1936 (24 JUL 2005*)
08 - 15 AUG 1936
09 - 20 AUG 1936
10 - 23 AUG 1995
11 - 28 AUG 1995, 1936, 1933
12 - 29 AUG 1995
13 - 08 SEP 1936, 1933
14 - 10 SEP 1936, 1933
15 - 16 SEP 1933
16 - 27 SEP 1933
17 - 28 SEP 1933
18 - 01 OCT 1933
19 - 25 OCT 1933
20 - 26 OCT 1933
