And he's write, it is a stupid idea. Almost as stupid as Rick Santorum's idea that the Catholic priest child sex scandal happened in Boston because it is such a "liberal" city.

Do you want a seven-day weather forecast for your ZIP code? Or hour-by-hour predictions of the temperature, wind speed, humidity and chance of rain? Or weather data beamed to your cellphone? But under a bill pending in the U.S. Senate, it might all disappear. The bill, introduced last week by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., would prohibit federal meteorologists from competing with companies such as AccuWeather and The Weather Channel, which offer their own forecasts through paid services and free ad-supported Web sites.

Regardless of the merits of the bill, I will always throw down with capitalism over socialism -- and not for pragmatic considerations of "effectiveness" either. Absolutely none of those goofs are competent to address the ethical ramifications of asserting a right to spend my money without my explicit permission.

Hmmm...I wasn't aware that the National Weather Service was a front (no pun intended) for liberal politics or even an example of "socialism."
And this is one Republican who happens to believe that whatever relatively miniscule portion of the national budget is spent on the NWS is money well spent.

Reasons they get to do that:
1. You are allowed to live in this country.
2. You are allowed to use the services the government provides for free.

I'm also smelling a locked/deleted topic soon...

It's a government agency, and as such, its defenders by definition throw in their lot with the ethical implications of "coerced redistribution of property" (AKA: "socialism"; and the property in this case being other people's money).tndefender wrote:Hmmm...I wasn't aware that the National Weather Service was a front (no pun intended) for liberal politics or even an example of "socialism."mike18xx wrote:Regardless of the merits of the bill, I will always throw down with capitalism over socialism -- and not for pragmatic considerations of "effectiveness" either. Paying obsessive attention to which particular faction of a quarrelsome pirate crew grabs the largest share of the loot, and comparing the beauty of the various whores in the various brothels it spends the loot on, is to overlook the ethics of the matter I was alluding to.And this is one Republican who happens to believe that whatever relatively miniscule portion of the national budget is spent on the NWS is money well spent.

How gracious of the feudal overseers to "allow" us serfs to live in the land of our birth.DoctorHurricane2003 wrote:Reasons they get to do that:Regardless of the merits of the bill, I will always throw down with capitalism over socialism -- and not for pragmatic considerations of "effectiveness" either. How, exactly, are they "free" if one is compelled to pay for them regardless of contract?2. You are allowed to use the services the government provides for free.

Shhhh! There is little sense in debating a purebred libertarian, just as there is little point in trying to explain the world to an anarchist or a die-hard communist. Purely ideological politcal theories tend to be smooth and warm and fun to talk about, but they don't relate much to reality.

Yep. No taxpaying = prison, etc. The best things in life don't come free. Hey we are getting protected by our military......hmm we shouldn't have to pay for that cause we were born here.........guess they don't get paid for risking their lives then.

I'm not certain I'd fit however your defining term (I suspect not), but I'll say this: It's pointless to attempt "debating" someone whom you intend to rob anyway at the end of the day -- that's just insulting -- an adjective apt of pretty much all politicians. I say they should pull guns out like an honest crooks.Windy wrote:There is little sense in debating a purebred libertarian
You mean the money their spending isn't real, but is rather incorporeal money made out of the same ethereal matter as angels and djinns?Purely ideological politcal theories tend to be smooth and warm and fun to talk about, but they don't relate much to reality.
