"Fish" - what they are, and what they aren't

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

"Fish" - what they are, and what they aren't

#1 Postby simplyme » Sun Jul 24, 2005 12:22 pm

Please try to be considerate when using the term "fish" when describing a storm. Both this season, and last season (I'm relatively new here), we had several people referring to storms as "fish" simply because they didn't hit the mainland of the US.

The term fish refers to a storm that does not make landfall. Ever. Islands DO count. Especially to all the people living there. Let's not discount a storm simply because it didn't hit the mainland. To those people affected by it, it most assuredly was not a fish. It hit their homes, their families, their neighbors, their lives.

I think most when referring to a fish storm, mean they re curve out to sea and miss The CONUS. Your point is valid but like I said, I don't think people discount the islands on purpose.

Islands are osmetimes very difficult to see on maps, and one has to know a good bit of geography in order to know hwat areas are affected. A good example is the British Virgin islands. They are so tiny it is hard for people to recognize them and know the impact of a hurricane on them. Ive made it ap oint to study up on the geography and location of islands in the Atlantic basin and I certainly understand that there are an awful lot of people outside the CONUS that are affected by disaster as well. a fish is a storm that recurves from the open Atlantic and out to sea without affecting ANYTHUING. Even a Bermuda hit counts as a landfalling storm.

Then again, isn't there a bit of a difference between a storm like Franklin, brushing by the Bahamas and Bermuda with very light winds and rain, and Fabian, making a direct major landfall on Bermuda? Nobody considers Fabian a fish, but most consider Franklin to be one.

Easy for a guy in Maine to say!

Be careful what you wish for...the SSTs up east are awfully high this summer and a couple of forecasters who like to venture into the realm of seasonal geographic landfall forecasting have NE and the Canadian maritimes on their potential hit list.

This is how I feel. And when I gave that speech to my parents, not in those words obviously, I got a lecture about how dangerous they are, etc, etc... Which is true. I'd just like to experience it for myself, you know?

On the subject of fish, this one looks like the quintessential "fish" to me:

Image

It traversed about 43 degrees of longitude without coming within 150 miles of any land. Pretty impressive (and rather elliptical) track.

Some may be surprised at how many people live on some of those "dots" on the map.

For instance, Barbados (where I live) has a population of around 270,000 people. That's over 1/4 million! (And that's not even counting the tourists).
