Obituary - Hurricane Emily
Hurricane Emily - July 10, 2005 - July 21, 2005
Born from a tropical wave on July 10th in the mid-Atlantic ocean, tropical
depression number 5 quickly strengthened into Tropical Storm Emily on
July 11th. Emily continued moving toward the Windward Islands,
strengthening into a category 1 hurricane on July 13th.
On the fourth day of her life, Emily entered a rapid intensification cycle,
and became a category 2 hurricane on July 14. Later that day, Emily
continued to strengthen quickly into a category 3 hurricane. The
intensification continued into the 15th, where Emily reached
strong category 4 status.
After roughing up the windward islands, Emily brutally pounded the
Yucatan Peninsula, near Cozumel, on July 18th. Spending a little time
over land weakened Emily back to a category one hurricane.
That would not last, as Emily quickly spun back up to category 3 status in
the Bay of Campeche. On July 20, 2005, Emily made her last landfall
in extreme Northeast Mexico, about 80 miles South of Brownsville, Texas,
as a category 3 hurricane. Twice, Emily made landfall in Mexico as a
major hurricane.
While making landfall over Northeast Mexico, Emily spawned several
tornadic children over South Texas and Mexico.
Emily continued to plow Westward in Mexico, until she reached her final
resting place in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
Emily was preceded in death by sisters Arlene and Cindy, and brothers
Bret and Dennis. Brother Franklin currently resides in the Bahamas
as a tropical storm.

Because every proper funeral needs a song...
Emily (with apologies to Barry Manilow)
I remember all her life
Rain and wind through paradise,
Looking at the BAMM,
The GFS with every run, updates through the night,
the night goes into
Morning for the tenth straight day;
See what Bastardi has to say.
Looking at her eye,
I see an ERC, but I never realized
how darn tired she made me
Oh Emily
well, you grew and you blew without ceasing,
now you've faded away.
Oh, Emily,
Messed up Grenada, you weren't teasing
They should retire you today. Oh, Emily!
I'm logged on good ol’ Storm 2k;
Watching posters flame away.
Caught up in a world of poleward climbing,
Mexico’s on many minds
But the Texans aren’t buying
Oh Emily
well, you grew and you blew without ceasing,
now you've faded away.
Oh, Emily,
Cozumel didn't find you too pleasing,
They should retire you today. Oh, Emily!
High Cat 4 in July, they’re issuing warnings
Despite what Sting may say, it ain’t global warming
Oh Emily
well, you grew and you blew without ceasing,
now you've faded away.
Oh, Emily,
the same track NHC kept releasing,
And we’ll miss you!
