The Z is for ZULU - or Grenwich Mean Time (GMT).

For Eastern time, you subtract 4 hours during daylight savings time (the summer), so 21-4=17 17 is 5PM

For Central time, you subtract 5 hours during daylight savings time (the summer), so 21-5=16 16 is 4PM

That way, everyone works from a universal base time.

At 2130Z, AF305 was at 30 25' N 88 50' W, which is about 650 nautical miles away from the center of Frankin reported by the NHC in the latest advisory.

2130. 3025N 08850W 01628 0121 051 005 174 144 006 01785 0000000000

2000Z position 30 49' N 86 25' W suggests a cruising speed of 250 knots, a leisurely pace that would not get them to the center before 8 PM (not a big deal, of course, since there are no intermediate advisories being issued now).

2200. 3049N 08625W 07008 0472 177 004 147 243 005 07501 0000000000

When did people start calling it Z? We all know it as GMT here. (Unless of course you are interested in the weather but I still prefer to use GMT)

U.S. Military has called it Zulu time for probably as long as they have had a need for coordinated time. I suspect the National Weather Service borrowed it from there.

I don't know about other services, but the Navy has a phonetic alpahbet designator for each time zone (IIRC, east coast Zulu -5 time zone is Romeo).

It does appear that all services use the phonetic alphabet designators; also my memory was correct, Romeo is the designator for Zulu -5)

See http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbr ... timezones/

Looks like that should support 55mph at the surface. They just got there may find a little more, but pressure is key here. Would think 55mph is about it this evening unless we see nice pressure drop.
