Public Advisory Question

#1 Postby Swimdude » Thu Jul 21, 2005 9:46 pm

I normally have the public advisory sent directly to my e-mail... This hasn't occured with TD#6 / Franklin yet... And we're nearing the 3rd advisory. I recieved everything through Emily. Anyone else having the same problem?

Is your monitor on?

Is the email plugged into an electric outlet that is working?

Do you have interenet?

Do you remember your passwords?

Do you have Spam blocking setup?

Can you recieve other email?

Have you attempted to re-subscribe to the mailer?

I love the new tech support lines that have computers that can interpret what your saying and give automated help. Some have worked, others make me quite angry!

"I'm sorry, i could no understand what you were saying please try again"

"I'm sorry i still could not understand you please rephrase"

"I'm sorry i'm having difficulty helping you, would you like to speak with a representative"

"I'm sorry I could not understand your last response"

(I get angry and tell it to give me a damn human)

"I'm very sorry i haven't been able to help you; I'm transfering you to the first available representative"

(waits on line for 25 min to reach the one of 10 reps handling 10,000 calls a day. lol)
Then we start the damn text book problem solving, becuase god forbid they hire intelligent people and train them to problem solve on their own. ;)

/End of rant...
Sorry for taking the thread off track.

I get the advisories emailed to me by NHC

go to http://www.nhc.noaa.gov then click "E-mail Advisories" which is on the blue strip on the left-hand side and is sixth under the heading "Get Storm Info"

then just take it from there...

I used to work for Alltel Communications as a DSL Help Desk technician. We didn't use a script or anything to troubleshoot the problem, but they did teach us to start with the basics: "Do you have power to your modem? Is your modem properly connected to your computer? Let's try powercycling your modem, etc." And for good reason.

I would estimate that 8 out of 10 calls were resolved by checking the very most basic of things first. And if one of those most basic of things is not correct, all of the more advanced troubleshooting is worthless because you won't have a DSL signal to even troubleshoot.

I remember one of my funnier calls. It went something like this:

Me: Thank you for calling the Alltel DSL Help Desk. This is Brian. May I help you?

Lady: I sure hope you can help me! I just installed your DSL on my computer and now my computer doesn't work. You broke my computer! Are you going to send somebody out here to fix it, or what?!?!

Me: What is wrong with your computer, ma'am?

Lady: My mouse won't even work, for starters!

Me: Is your mouse connected to your computer, ma'am?

Lady: No. I disconnected the mouse to hook up the DSL modem to my computer.

Me: Ma'am. That mouse isn't going to work for you unless it's connected to your computer. What I'm going to need you to do is reconnect the mouse, and then I'll be happy to help you get your DSL up and running.

    Lady: Okay, just a minute.

(Lady puts phone down on desk and I can hear her cursing as she rummages through her cables. After about 5 minutes she gets back on line)

Lady: Okay, I connected my mouse and it now appears to be working fine.

Me: Okay, Ma'am. Now I'm going to need you to click on "Start," then "Control Panel," and then "Internet Options."

Lady: Okay, give me just a...ummm....ummm. GREAT! NOW MY GOD D()&*97!ED KEYBOARD ISN'T WORKING!!!

Me: Ma'am. I'm going to need you to plug your keyboard back in now....

You really have no idea how technologically challenged the majority of the population is until you've worked on a help desk.
