Sounds like a little envy there all you wanting the hurricane hunters in your home state, especially you Floridians.Just be thankful you still have them because at one time the Air Force was going to cut the program.
The hurricane hunters have flown from Biloxi for years now but all of you know they do fly from other bases when it's too long of a flight back to Bilox then back to the storm!

Position at 1845Z... 27.2 North 83.0 West... check against 1745Z position suggests that the plane is flying at about 290 knots (or faster, because the distance calculator assumes a great circle path and the plane isn't necessarily flying that, so the distance would be greater)... the slower speed than I assumed in my previous posts yields a revised estimate of ETA in the center of 2030-2045Z...

Do you mean warmed or cooled?

Bright reds = colder.

For JamesFromMaine2

211935 Date and time the observation was transmitted. 21 is the date
time is 1935Z

19334 time of the observation: 1933Z . 4 shows that the platform has dewpoint observation capabilities

502555 means Thursday. 0 indicates northwestern hemisphere (east of 90 degrees west). 25.5 is the Latitude. Thanks to the 0 we now that this is North.

78800 78.8 is Longitude; thanks to previous we know that this is West. First zero indicates no turbulence, second zero indicates clear skies

64000 640 is pressure altitude in dekameters (so, 6400 meters). first zero indicates that the wind observation is a spot observation, second zero indicates winds were observed using doppler radar or inertial systems.

99005 this is the flight level winds block... I think 99 is supposed to indciate no direction (or variable or something of the sort) .. otherwise that block would indicate direction in tens of degrees. 005 is wind speed in knots... so 5 knots

62651 Since 62 is greater than 50, this is a negative temperature (-12 degrees Celsius). 65 is dewpoint (-15 degrees Celsius) 1 indicates scattered clouds

/8041 slash tells us that this is the pressure level group... 8 tells us that this is a D-value (the difference between the standard pressure level and the actual pressure level). This tells us that the pressure level is 41 meters above the standard.

The thorough decode guide is here: http://www.hurricanehunters.com/recco.htm

Assuming a system has X convective capability at time Y, if that capability becomes strung into a circle around a developing eyewall rather than concentrated in a single orbiting blob, tops will warm. That should not trick anyone into thinking the system is weakening.

For these

1941 time of ob in Zulu
2518N 07810W position in degree minute format
01930 pressure altitude in meters
0128 D-value in meters If this value is negative, then the first digit is a five
050 flight level wind direction
024 max 30 second average of flight level wind in knots
160 Flight level temperature in degrees and tenths Celsius. 1 indicates a negative value .

064 dew point temperature
024 maximum 10 second average wind speed in knots
02096 radar altitude in meters
0000000000 Each zero refers to a group above (starting with latitude). Zero indicates that the value is not a default and not suspect. A 1 would indicate that a value is either suspect or a default...

This is the master decode guide (note that it is a pdf)
