This article mentions 'spectacular demolishments' and heavy flooding in Cozumel. In Cancun there was heavy beach erosion and waves of 4 meters in height were observed between Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc.

(http://www.maps-of-mexico.com/quintana- ... p-d0.shtml for reference map )

umm, 4 meters in height not 12... I was mentally approximating that and spit out my conversion instead of the actual number....[/i]

Just like in any large area, there will be places that flood and places that get heavily damaged, and other places that hold up well. The reports I have found from the highly populated areas of Cozumel have been very encouraging so far... minimal damage considering the powerful storm, and limited flooding reported. Electricity is down, but phone and cell phones are working.

Yeah, as we were talking about yesterday, Cozumel is not exactly a tiny island... it is 30 miles long and the hotels are on the mid to upper part of the island on the channel side, not sea-side.

Not surprising. Before the age of satellite this would have killed many more probably...

They mean no deaths actually caused by the storms... the 3 deaths (2 in a helicopter crash, one electrocution) were before the storm arrived...

update from Cozumel resident who surveyed the town this afternoon:

""1 pm update.."

Just back from surveying island and talking to friends. When power is back, most places will be open. Yes, some of the southern hotels took some hits, but Cozumel is resourceful and will come back faster than you can imagine. Structures largely looked intact all over downtown.. downed trees and power lines, broken windows. People out cleaning up all over. May be a week before everybody gets power, but the central business district and some neightborhoods, including Corpus Christi, will get it first. We lost power at 9 in colonia mateos; corpus christi lost it at 11; others lost it at 7. So, coming back will vary also.
Saw Raul at Rockn' Java and he will be open as soon as he gets power...hopefully within a day or less? Palmeras had a generator going and was setting up and looked like it was opening for business later today. And, yes, make your reservations with us for the weekend... everybody loves candlelight dining, right?"

From Bill's board:

Zahirah writes: "Access is still denied to Tulum beach. We have been told it is considered a "disaster zone." We were finally able to communicate with staff who evacuated to Playa del Carmen.

Tulum pueblo isn´t very treesy, so I imagine cleanup will be focused on the beaches and the coastal highway. Apparently the road from Tulum pueblo to the beach is okay, but blocked by the army, though the coastal highway is washed out.

Just thought I would post this since there seems to be so little information coming out of Tulum
