Sounds more like damage control to me! (They probably don't want to scare off potential tourists.) Cat 4s are monsters and there had to be at least some damage, unless there were no buildings in the area that the eyewall passed over.

Time will reveal what actually happened.

Damage pictures?

#5 Postby Wishful Hurricane Hunter » Mon Jul 18, 2005 5:21 am

Have there been any pictures yet? It's getting close to or already is daylight down there so there should be a few prelim shots that the newsies will uplink instantly to give us an idea of what happened.

It doesn't look like there are too many lights on right now...if I'm looking at the map right, the two brightest lights would be Cancun on the east coast and Merida on the west...

they tried this little stunt after kenna in 2002, but were humiliated when news crews got down to the beach, or should I say the remains of the beach

The clump of lights to the NNW of cozumel is promising, however the complete lack of light from cozumel turns the stomach quite a bit.

Using the "NASA Visible Earth" view shows a lot more light and even a fair amount coming from what I presume is Cozumel. Perhaps they somehow got luckier than everybody thought...

Often, I notice that shortly after the eye passes, many say it wasn't that bad, but after whole storm and people get a good look throughout the whole area, it's worse than they though. Preliminary reports I find to be very misleading, especially when the eye moves through at night.

agreed they just cannot see how bad it is!! I am sure future tourism also has alot to do with it.

I'm just concerned that there is no report yet on stormcarib.com or on the blog that is on another thread from Cozumel. So until I hear something to the contrary that is factual (from people I know there or in contact with people there), I can't believe that it was a light hit...and hope I'm really wrong.

Im sorry but there is no way a Cat4 would go over Cozumel and Playa del Carmen and do no damage. See what Charley and Ivan did to US structures, and imagine what it could do to Cozumels structures.

There has to be some areas of damage from this thing.

We should find out more as the day progresses.

I have stayed in Playa del Carmen, and I know that there must be some damage to hotel and resort property along that coast. And heck, there is a Senor Frogs restaurant there that is on a pier to the ferry over to Cozumel. No way did they get off without damage.

And the Xel-Ha inland water sports park is just onshore and home to a ton of snorkeling and swimming activities. It is not so well constructed nor invulnerable to tidal surge that it would go unharmed.

Tulum itself is rock ruins....that could easily have stood the test and is up above water level.

The town of Playa del Carmen has a lot of shanties for the Mayan culture people there. No way were they spared any damage either.

I think we will see and hear of at least some damage in that resort town.
