Before Hurricane Andrew came and destroyed it, we had a fishing camp down Bayou Dularge (near the Gulf of Mexico, below Houma) We were just kids then. And we used to jump off the wharf and swim in the bayou all the time. And they alligators not far away. We were just kids and you don't think about any danger.

If everyone went by that philosophy, then no one would swim anywhere. I have went tubing, skiing and have even swam where gators are known to live. Does that make me dumb? NO! What is dumb is the people who have obviously fed this alligator. I encountered an alligator while tubing on a Louisiana River and the gator did not even bother us.

Well, I'm not that good of a swimmer. I'd say that the gator would be a little faster'n me in the water. Guess I won't be anybody's buddy when it comes to swimmin in the canal.

But I'm not following how Kevins philosophy would reduce the number of attacks. It woud just shift the attacks to those who are not too swift - swimming or otherwise.

Me and my 3 kids were fishing by a creek and my youngest which at the time was 7 he saw what he thought was a small gator tail and grabbed it.I did not see it but my oldest boy which was 12 at the time said a very large turtle swung around and grabbed his hand ..My oldest boy said it was like tugawar he said the turtle almost got him...Only his 2 legs were out of the water that his brother was holding onto. I seen a boat heading fast in that direction and heard yelling when I got there he was soaking wet with a large gash on top of his hand that required 26 stitches..A person on the boat saw it happen said it was a gator snapping turtle probably the biggest he had ever seen he said over a hundred pounds..Later I found out they can reach 250 lbs....Even the turtles will try to get you down here......


I dont think the turtle was actually thinking of him as food.It was the turtle was just tring to get away but had calibs hand locked in his mouth.......

Riding in a car is far more dangerous Kevin. Are you ready to start walking? I didn't think so. We assume many risks in every day life. This guy had probably swam in that canal many time. I've swam in the oceans, rivers and have been waist deep in the swamp back home in Louisiana years ago. Every time we encountered a wild animal it took off as it was more scared of us than we of it. I'll continue to swim in the ocean, I just pray I don't get eaten.......MGC

When I was working for Asplunch tree co. we had to go on a island and trim the trees away from power lines we started on the back side of the island and there were gators everywhere!!!!!!!!!The boat was only 16ft and the gators were about 12 to 18ft!!!!!!!I told the foreman we need a bigger boat ASP!!!!!!!The next day the game warrens were there and told us it was ok to scare them off with a rifle but not to hit them just shoot next to them.It worked they would swim a way and never bother us.Later that week we found out why the gators was so big!!!The fishing there was out of this world!!!Catfish,Bass,gaint Bluegills(1 to 1.5lb)!!!!!!!Next year when I get my boat I am going back there fishing

Really swimming in the south is not that dangerous statistically. However while driving does produce a great boost in quality of life, swimming in an aligator inhabited canal is a bit more frivilous. To each their own though, life isn't fun when its calculated. I am a kung fooist so I'm not scared of aligators or sharks. They would be in for quite a surprise.

Now Riding in a car with a gator is exponentially more dangerous, and to be attempted only be professional drivers on a closed course.


Post Scriptum : It really is a sad day when people die. This was a tragedy. Being eaten isn't a joke. However I think its strange that we find an animal eating us odd, and that we make a decision that we will kill an animal for doing something we do all the time. I understand that it is necessary, but then again, it was necessary and instinctual for the aligator to attack.
