#1 Postby wxvine » Sat Jul 16, 2005 5:41 pm

Currently we have hurricane chaser Jim Edds on lcoation in Cancun, Mexico shooting video along the coast waiting for Emily. He will move as needed tomorrow as Emily nears the coast.

Here are a few incoming video clips from Jim from this afternoon in Cancun. He will be updating me a few times overnight and during the storm.

My best friends son is the Social Director at Playa del Secreto Resort. It is located between Cancun and Cozumel. His mom tells me that the resort owner issued him a 38 pistol to shoot at looters or to protect himself if the looters shot at him. Now mind you, my friend and her family are so nonviolent. They evacuated to Cancun because it is higher. I never ask for any prayers from ya'll but this time i'm asking for you to say just a short one for him.

Between Cancun and Cozumel? That has to be on an island, yes? If so, can he just leave? I think he probably need to evacuate if this hits as a 5. In any case, my thoughts are with your friend's son. :(

Okay, I searched it out and it appears to be the Yucatan coast south of Cancun ~~ possibly in the Tulum area. More isolated there than on the Cancun strip. I understand why they armed him, but if it gets bad, he may be cut off for days. Will send positive thoughts to him. Hopefully this thing will veer a bit North and all they get is rough winds and surf...

Didnt Jim get his car window blasted out with Charley and was located outside the Irish Bar? You guys did an extreme jon with Charley. The best and most intense hurricane - Eyewall video ever. Location is everything. Mark Suddath had extreme video as well. All you guys need to team up for an all-star hurricane chasing documentary.

Katdaddy - Yes Jim did loose his window and car in Hurricane Charley. Tonight he's at a resort in Cancun but being told they will have to move in the morning as the building sits on the water. He will be searching all morning for a building that can hold up to Emily away from the water.

Should have another video update overnight and early tomorrow. Also thanks for the nice comments.

As for Mark..yes they do a great job with their research during these landfalling hurricanes. I enjoyed watching their production from 2004. Mark and I bump into each other from time to time in the target area....fun group to chat with.

Jeff,

I was looking a Cancun for a chase as well ~ but there was no way I was going to pay the £1,300 ($2,300) for the flight from London and truth be know I left it too late..

Regarding a safe location - I have been looking at the hotels along the "strip" for any that have elevated parking.. non found so far but another suggestion would be the airport which is just 5 miles from the coast and it would give Jim the option of the "307" in order to adjust for the eye.

Ether way I am not sure that I would like the strip as it is only 250 yards wide - I recall the wave damage done to Gulf Shores after Ivan..

Looks very exciting, and all, but I gotta say this video certainly seems like reckless activity - especially for someone supposedly in "the know???" Wonder if he still shoots for Discovery? I don't believe even Mark S. places himself "unreasonably" into obviously dangerous situations.

update - 5:30 pm ET

Tulum, Mexico ( just southwest of Cozumel, Mexico)

Just spoke with Hurricane Chaser Jim Edds. He has found a large hotel near Tulum, Mexico that is located near the coast west-southwest of Cozumel. Jim is getting last minute daylight shots and touring the area before dark sets in. He said this would likely be his last call until after the storm as he's already having cell phone issues.

I will be standing by during the overnight hours tonight awaiting any word from Jim via cell or email video updates. I will post if I hear from him.

Update-
Jim Edds on his return flight back to Miami right now. He said that Playa del Carmen had alot of wind damage and there is a short video clip sent in from him a short time ago on the following page. http://www.weathervine.com/hurricanes/emily/

He said he will be sending in alot more of during and after Emily in the Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Mexico area's. He was having issues getting video out at the airport in Cancun and said the internet networks are up and down.

Thanks for the update Jeff ~ I am glad to hear that Jim is fine. Also looking at that tower I am not surprised there are communiction issues in that part of the world right now.
