2005- My cruise to nowhere!
Looks like my Western Caribbean cruise in September (Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel) might be circling the bahamas for 7 days if this season keeps on keeping on. First Dennis with Jamaica, now Emily looks to hit Cayman pretty good and then demolish Cozumel. Serenity Now!!

I hear ya! I'm leaving for the western carribbean on July 31. Cozumel, Grand Caymen, Belize, etc...Either there won't be any ports left, or there will be another storm and I'll end up who-knows-where. I cruise every summer and take the hurricane risk, but I've never sweated it much, except for this year!

I am probably going to Jamaica, Cayman and Cancun in late October, looks like Jamaica and Cayman got lucky again, hoping that Cancun can luck out next.
The cruise before last, I went to Progresso, Mexico a few weeks after Isidore hit there. They had just opened the port. They were still cleaning up the Hurricane damage, especially in the town away from the tourist area. While we were in town, it was really interesting listening to the locals tell us their Hurricane stories and how they survived in their homes.

honeymoon cruise in 1999
Just to share a funny hurricane and cruise story, I got married in November 1999. I knew that here in South FL, by the time you get to November, you've pretty much seen the whole hurricane season. Not much develops, and when it does, it doesn't hit FL. Well, our honeymoon was a 10-day "circle the Caribbean" cruise out of Miami going to places like Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Aruba, etc. But if you recall, 1999 was the year of hurricane Lenny -- that weird storm that formed in the W Caribbean and tracked E and ENE toward the Leeward Islands ... and got as strong as 135 mph, I think:

Turns out, the cruise BEFORE ours (same itinerary, same ship) had squally weather, had to adjust its path to avoid the storm, etc. and basically had a terrible experience. But ours (because it was just AFTER Lenny) was perfect -- one minor shower the entire time! Let's just say my marriage might have been a pretty short one if my whole "there are no hurricanes to worry about ... it's November!" plan had backfired (which could have happened if we got married one week earlier!

I took 2 western Caribbean cruises both out of New Orleans. March 2001 on the Carnival Inspiration and February 2003 on the Carnival Conquest. I like to cruise in the non-hurricane season. Even though, I am taking a risk going ahead with my plans for Destin first week of August. I just hope the tropics give me a break for my Florida beach vacation.

Just think of it this way, if a hurricane goes into New Orleans the first week of August, you are already evacuated. I might take some pics and important papers just in case, because you know once a hurricane warning is issued for N.O you would have a hard time getting back in then back out while they are evacuating!
