May 2003 on record shattering pace for tornadoes in 1 month.

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Thu May 08, 2003 10:44 pm

So far since the beginning of May ... already (as of 11:30 pm EDT) - from May 1st to May 8th --- already 253 tornadoes have been reported (final tallies won't be available so quite some time) however, the record for May tornadoes stands at 391 set in May 1995. IMO, this record is in serious jeopardy and will likely be broken this May, perhaps before May 15th or sooner if this pace continues. June 1992 recorded 399 tornadoes which right now has the most tornadoes in any one month, which will likely be surpassed this month.

I used a report filed by Dr. Greg Forbes on the Weather Channel earlier during severe weather coverage with a graphic of 213 tornadoes from May 1st to May 7th, and included tonight's 40 tornadoes ...

Using SPC preliminary tornado data reports, tornadoes are as followed for May 2003.

1st - 12
2nd - 5 (17)
3rd - 18 (35)
4th - 94 (129)
5th - 23 (152)
6th - 54 (206)
7th - 33 (239)
8th - 45 (284)

Totals since last Saturday at 267 (as of 12AM EDT-May 9th)

Yikes! Even with a lull this month, we may still see a record number of tornadoes this May.
