But the US has responded to those declarations.

US calls Chinese general's nuclear threat 'irresponsible'
07.15.2005, 03:30 PM

WASHINGTON (AFX) - The US shrugged off as 'irresponsible' a reported threat by a Chinese general to use nuclear weapons if attacked by the US in a conflict over Taiwan.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called the remarks attributed to General Zhu Chenghu 'unfortunate' and said he hoped they did not reflect the views of the Chinese government.

'I haven't seen all the remarks but what I've seen of them, I'll say that they're irresponsible,' McCormack told reporters.

The Financial Times and the Asian Wall Street Journal on Friday quoted Zhu, a professor at China's National Defence University, as issuing the threat at a briefing organised by a private Hong Kong organisation

I hope that the sleeping giant does stay sleeping and not mess with the US because of The Taiwan thing.

Well, at least now the feds will have a convenient excuse when they chicken out when China invades Taiwan. Wouldn't want to upset our big trading partner, don't ya know.

General Zhu did state that this was his "personal opinion, and didn't reflect Chinese policy"...or, does it? :larrow:

Thanks for this thread, cycloneye. This is indeed irresponsible, and I think MFN status should be revoked until their government repudiates it. This is reckless fodder!!!

feederband we also need them to keep buying up our debt. Think what you want but they are preparing for something. Taiwan seems to be the target from what I have read.

Economic interdependence doesn't stop wars. WWI was an economic suicide pact between the European states, but it happened anyways. Dollars and cents does not drive politics among nations, only power.

cycloneye I am not sure what you are trying to say here so I will take a guess. I don't think China will be asking for money help if the Typhoon hits as a low cat1. Taiwan would be the one looking for help after it goes through. There are almost 23 million people on that island sized slightly smaller than Maryland and Delaware combined.
