Question on Major Hurricanes in July

#1 Postby HURAKAN » Thu Jul 14, 2005 10:40 am

Has there ever been a season with two major hurricanes in July?

I don't think so. If Emily makes it, this will be another record.

Getting one major hurricane before August is rare enough, as it's only happened in the following years:
1909 (Hit Texas)
1926 (Cat. 4 over the Bahamas, then weakened to a Cat. 1 before hitting Florida)
1945 (June Cat. 3 in the Gulf, weakened to a cat. 1 on west Florida landfall)
1951 (Able became a Cat. 3 while looping over the Gulf Stream in May)
1957 (Audrey was a Cat. 4 in the Gulf in June)
1961 (Anna became a major hurricane in the Central Carib in late July)
1966 (Alma was a major in Gulf in June)
1996 (Bertha became a major north of Dominican Republic in July)

But there were 2 in 1916...
The first formed in June and became a major hurricane in early July, then hit Alabama. The second hit the Lesser Antilles as a TS, then went out to sea, becoming a major on the way. Reanalysis says the 2nd wasn't a major, but a third July hurricane was upgraded in reanalysis to a major hurricane.

At this rate we'll have at least 3. Then comes August and September.
