What's the record for GoM systems in one season?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What's the record for GoM systems in one season?

#1 Postby BayouVenteux » Thu Jul 14, 2005 9:49 am

While the emphasis may certainly shift to the eastern Caribbean/SE United States in time, no one can deny that it's been a wild, if not unprecedented, start for the Gulf of Mexico in 2005.

I'm tossing this one out for the folks on the board who are without peer when it comes to tropical fact-finding...what's the modern record for most Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche storms in a season? Any additional information or links on dates/tracks/intensity would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

edit: just to clarify, this is ALL storms tracking into or through, not just ones originating in the basin.

12 Gulf of Mexico storms occurred in 1933. The Oct 1 storm was a close shave. It moved from the Caribbean over Cuba and hit the Keys, just barely making it in the Gulf.

The first 7 storms in 1933 were Gulf storms.

We're right up there with that record, that's for sure.
