ATL: 25" from 5 NS's since 9/04! 13" 7/1-11 record

#1 Postby LarryWx » Tue Jul 12, 2005 12:40 pm

- ATL has received 13.01" of rainfall for the period 7/1-11/05, the most for any 7/1-11 since records started in 1879.

- About 12" of this was associated with two trop. systems, Cindy and Dennis.

- For any ENTIRE July dating back to 1879, the 13.01" has been exceeded only twice: 17.71" in 7/1994 (~8" from Alberto) and 14.11" in 7/1887 (~9" from TC #4).

- The 5.14" of 7/6/05 (from Cindy) is the 2nd highest for ANY JUL day since 1879, exceeded only by the 5.35" of 7/10/1948 from TC #2. It is also the 6th highest for ANY day since 1879 and the highest since the 6.68" of 10/4/1995 from Opal.

- The 4.69" of 7/11/05 (from Dennis) is the 3rd highest for ANY JUL day since 1879. (ATL also received 2.17" on 7/10/05 from Dennis.)

- ATL has received ~25" of rainfall from FIVE separate named trop. systems since 9/04: Frances, Ivan and Jeanne combined produced ~13" in 9/04 while Cindy and Dennis combined produced ~12" in 7/05.

That sounds like good news. For years, every time I visited my sister or friends up there, they always seem to have a major drought.

Now I am hoping that my friends in the Houston area will get some relief as well.

They've had TOO much rain... there was major flooding there yesterday. Six Flags was closed because parts of the park were under water.

And it continues again! We've had several waves of intense 15-20 minute downpours over the last couple of hours. Fortunately it's mostly in the NE metro ATL area that was spared the really heavy rain from Dennis. Unfortunately I have to drive home right through it in about 20 minutes.

I believe it. I'm not in a flood prone area but know quite a few people who had to drive around many flooded roads on the way into work. I figured we were safe with the more westerly track of Dennis, but a rain band decided to park on top of us. I was shocked this morning to see that the Atlanta area got the most rain from Dennis.

Not to make light of the flooding, but did any of you happen to catch Soledad O'Brien on CNN this morning? She was covering the GA flooding, and when video came on of some cows trodding through a flooded pasture, she commented "Oh, those poor water buffalo".

Priceless...
