At this pace, we'll run out of names

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a long dull period following TD5, or the storm after that.

today is the 41st day of hurricane season. supposing that TD5 becomes Emily later today (which most likely it will) we will be averaging a named storms just over every eight days... 183 days in the hurricane season and so statistically speaking we could see 22 named storms this season

I wonder what would happen if we somehow got to that auxiliary list and there was a devastating storm on that list. Like, for instance, a bad Hurricane Beta hits somewhere. Would it just be gone or what would happen to that name?

Not that I hope that happens though. Just curious.

Hurricane Beta...sounds like a software program :D

(I have to agree with Pebbles, my mind's fried & leaking out of my head)

man, the geek in me would love to see "Hurricane Beta".....that would rock....I'd probably have to follow it to wherever it made landfall, then start printing shirts, bumper stickers, yanno, the works, "I survived Hurricane Beta v1.0"......ahhh to dream a little dream

cheers

Just wait untio Hurricane Omega

#35 Postby jimvb » Mon Jul 11, 2005 12:16 pm

I think the NHC policy upon running out of names is that it would run through the Greek alphabet. Hurricane Alpha, Beta, and so forth. This means we get eventually to Hurricane Omega. That would be The Ultimate Hurricane. Omega is the last letter of the alphabet and so is taken to mean God or the Ultimate. Mathematicians use it to mean infinity, the first transfinite ordinal number. Let's hope Hurricane Omega has winds of a mere 100 mph instead of Omega mph.

HURRICANE DELTA ADVISORY NUMBER 33
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
11 AM AST MON OCT 24 2005

...POWERFUL DELTA MENACING THE DELTA OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER...

Personally I'm offended they haven't named one Pebbles yet! I think we should make protesting petition that they rename the P storm on this years list!!! What do you all say?
