CNN has reported that 98 between Okaloosa Island and Destin is under water and impassible. I don't think they know yet if there is damage to the road.

The part of 98 between Destin and FWB has been wiped out after every major storm since 95 (Maybe before, that's all I can remember). Opal really hurt the dunes back in 95, and there is nothing to keep the road from washing out during high surf, as it's between a bay and the ocean. My husband and I call this "the disposable highway", as sad as it is. They'll have it back up in a few days, as they always do.

My Dad lives in Niceville, just over the Destin bridge. His explanation of this storm was that "there must have been a glitch in the storm over us", as they had sun peeking through the skies less than 2 hours after the eye hit land. Amen for that, he just got his new roof finished after Ivan's damage. It seems like Ivan shook out and knocked out all of the weak trees and such last year, allowing the strong to survive for this season.

Good luck to all of those in the path who have cleanup or are waiting to deal with the torrential rains - our thoughts are with you.

once again I stress this would be an ideal time to consider moving away from the coast.

Help is on the way for that area. Saw huge caravans of Asplundh & power company trucks heading east on I-10 as I was heading back to Lafayette from Baton Rouge this evening.

Traffic on I-10 west seemed extremely light but it was very heavy on the eastbound side.

My thoughts are with all that were in the path of Dennis.

You got to love the Power company men (and women)... I know they get paid well for going out of town to help with disaster relief efforts..But they deserve to be paid well! They really deserve alot of credit none the less...
