Will "Dennis" be retired?

#1 Postby gilbert88 » Sun Jul 10, 2005 4:31 pm

Judging by the latest retirement trends, I'm almost certain this will be the first retired storm (and unfortunately its an almost a sure thing that there will be more to come) of the 2005 season.

What do you think?

Maybe not it did not even do 10 percent of what Ivan did.

Who knows? It hit as a Cat 2/3(was supposed to hit as a 3/4). Probably will retire it because of Cuba.

I do agree. More because of the fact it was a Cat. 3 in July and because of the damage and flooding across Cuba.

The damage might not be as widespread as Ivan's, but we haven't even got to see the damage to the barrier islands where Dennis came in, where damage may be worse than Ivan's damage. So, wait until we see the damage where the eye came in, before saying a statement like that.

I think it will....for starters it has already killed 32 people in the Caribbean at least. The damage that we have seen may not be great so far, but I am wondering what the scenes from Navarre may be like, as they were in the right-front quadrant of the storm I believe. They had a sustained wind of 99 mph as well if I heard right.

Dennis is likely to be retired in my opinion. I totally vote for the replacement name to be Derek if that occurs. I think you know why I pick Derek to be the replacement name.

Agreed. The mayor of Pensacola is on CNN now saying that lots of trees have been downed and fallen on homes/through roofs. He says they got at least 100 mph winds and they're still just now assessing damage.

My take is that it will be retired.Apart from Haiti,Cuba we have to wait for reports from the panhandle of Florida tommorow to see if there are fatalities but only based in what occured in the caribbean I say yes.

It will be retired because of Cuba alone...

This thing has set so many July records... Plus, it seems no one has noticed, it made THREE landfalls as a MAJOR hurricane! IN JULY.

No doubt in my mind. Dennis is History.

Not only that, but we still haven't seen what he's going to do inland. He's forecast to hang around inland until FRIDAY. That's a lot of rain he's gonna dump somewhere...and with lots of rain...floods and damage. Gotta factor that in too.

Oh, and Haiti was pretty hard hit by Dennis as well. ;)

There has been very little info/images from the damage in Cuba, but from what I've heard it could have been easily as bad as Michelle if not worse.

If our luck holds, we will hear the last of the name Dennis within 36 hours. He needs to be retired.

I do not understand why this question is being asked.

Cuba will be the nation to request The ethnocentricism in the field of science needs to stop. The most destructive hurricnae, possibly ever for Cuba, and we are questioning retirement?

Maybe I'm just in an awful mood due to a severe lack of sleep

Whew... Yeah as far as I know, you've been up all night. Get some rest... At least before TD 5 comes around. But agreed; definately retired.

Well, I wasn't questioning its potential retirement... it was more like asking for others' opinions. But yeah maybe this topic shouldn't have been raised yet.

To answer the question, yes.

But if deaths in the Caribbean/CA were a retirement factor, then names like Gordon and Cesar (which I was in) would be retired. Sorry, I just don't like the fact that those two aren't retired.

Oh yeah, and Alberto should have been retired in 94...

Cesar was retired and replaced by Cristobal, if I remember correctly.

I think the name Dennis is gone... he may not have come in as that Cat 4 but if you were watching CNN as they were getting the eye wall and trees were snapping and a large hotel sign being ripped apart he was no dud. And keep in mind they were on the weaker side of him. We still need to see what was left behind on his other side, and also keep in mind the #1 killer in the aftermath of these storms is flooding and death as a result of the massive rainfall they produce.
