Sean in New Orleans wrote:I hope noone is in Mobile...This is going to devastate Mobile, IMO. It could take years for Mobile to recover if this thing hits the AL/MS line. I'm sure the interstate bridge over the bay will be washed away, as well. How will we get to Florida & Gulf Shores from New Orleans if this occurs? We have got to pray this thing weaker. I'm serious.
There are many, many people left in Mobile. I know two people who are leaving at the crack of dawn...me and my spouse. As for Gulf Shores, if this hits here in Mobile, GS will take an even more severe hit than with Ivan. GS isn't even close to being what it was pre-Ivan. Heck, there are a lot of folks in Mobile who still have tarps, waiting on roofers.
I just hope we have something to come home to.

Of course you folks know your area best, but I let someone talk me into leaving at 6am instead of like midnight (Frances), and it put us right in morning traffic (weekday) and also right in the middle of the other "crack of dawn" bug-out traffic. More than a few will also be waiting for daylight and also many will simply lose it at the last minute and head-out, too. Just my two cents. I feel that if my inner-voice is saying to beat-feet, then sooner is better! Take our well-wishes and sincere prayers with you!

If I was in Mobile I'd be heading west or northwest right now. Conditions are already not good for travel, and in just hours they will be terrible. No doubt there are already large numbers of people in transit, but by 6-7 am it will be a madhouse. You will get stalled for indeterminate amounts of time on the highway, and be buffeted by heavy rain and winds.
Go now. Wake up hubby and get out.

Points along the FL coast are already experiencing wind gusts to 45 mph as the leading edge of the actual storm and the internal banding structure are starting to come ashore. Remember that sustained TS force winds extend 230 miles from the center and sustained 39 mph winds usually mean gusts of 60mph or so. By 4 hours from now, exposed coastal locations are likely to be seeing gusts running 60-70 mph.

I was thinking the same thing sooner...Traffic is going to be absolutely crazy in the morning when people wake up and realize the severity of the situation. Not to mention the conditions are going to go down hill rapidly.

Thanks for the Prayers. All of us along the Coast need them. Most of the posters have been through this type of situation and we all know how scary it is. I'm in the office at my house in West Mobile right now and my nerves are slightly SHOT !!!
God I wish there would be no more storm threats this year. This is just too much. I'll try to keep yall updated on this end as long as I have power

I would seriously consider getting the heck out of Mobile. If this were to directly hit you at this intensity, the word "life threatening" cannot be emphasized enough.

digitaldahling's husband works at one of the oil refineries in Mobile, and so her plans are mostly dictated by the refinery's retaining their decision-makers until the last minute. She does not take these storms lightly, believe me. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. When she says wee hours I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't mean 3:00 in the morning.

But I did see the various photos of storms like Hugo, Andrew, Opal, and of course my 3 last year..
I have a sick feeling this storm is gonna be up there in "damage shock" as in.. "Oh my god, I can't believe this"...
As I'm watching it make it's northward jog.. I'm still praying it doesn't make a quick right turn lol {even though that's virtually impossible}
Lets all say prayers tonight for S2kers and anyone else in the potential bulls eye of this storm.
As long as this doesnt go several miles west of mobile...driving storm surge of mobile into the city...It will be bad...but not..omg bad.
