Well, I believe the Harrision County Civil Defense department may have dropped the bomb on the residents... Maybe the casinos are influencing their decisions? The casinos obviously want revenue and closing them down costs them alot of money!

Biloxi/Gulfport is grossly underprepared at this point and if Dennis comes rushing in lives will be lost... Most people in this area are still under the impression that we will only see winds up to 40mph out of this storm.. That is what the local media has been advertizing all day. I know the Civil Defense doesnt want to be wrong like they were last year with Ivan they made thousand and thousands of people evacuate needlessly and probably took alot of heat for it. But I say it is better to be safe then sorry. I dont understand why Mobile and Baldwin Counties in Alabama are in hurricane prepardness mode and we are not. We are only 50 minutes from Mobile.

I say Harrison County Civil Defense is trying too hard to save face and are also being influenced by the Gaming Industry. It has been a grave injustice to residents of this county and when all is said and done some heads are gonna roll.

Here we go... mass chaos!

Who to blame for this one?

I'm just amazed. If you were in the cone, you should have been ready. 24 hours is not enough to get everyone out. If you leave now you can make it.... wait 2 hours and you might be screwed.

The mandatory evacuations are for all of Harrison County but it's for flood zone A residents (which I happen to be).. These are of course low-lying areas and flood prone areas.. It also calls for evacuation of those who live in homes that can't withstand 80 mph winds, typically mobile homes..

I'm not leaving because I have to report to work, it is mandatory that I be there... I will leave probably about 4 am and head into work, it is only 7 miles away... People stay for various reasons... A co-worker of mine has to come to work but his wife has to stay at his house with his mother. His mother is bed ridden and can not sit up for very long... It is sad to say but some have to stay in harms way because they just dont have another choice

Radar,

I'm very sorry to hear that. Where do you work? I totally understand some people just can't go. I hope you stay safe.

I'm going to state the obvious here, but based on past observations, they would not be doing this if they still felt Dennis was headed to Pensacola. They waited as long as they possibly could. Bad move.

I don't know if any of the locals remember Wade Guice, but this would not have played out like this if he were still alive, and running the Harrison County Civil Defense. That guy was all about saving lives.

They've been meeting with the gaming commission today, but I haven't heard anything official..

My g/f was supposed to go see Cats at the Biloxi Grand at 7.. The operator said she wasn't sure if the show would be on or not.. She said they were doing outside preparations like they were closing, but they didn't have an official closing time (or official word that they were closing).. She said some of the restaurants there had already closed..

So who knows?

I agree if Wade Guice were still alive this would have been played entirely differently... One thing about Wade he never was afraid to eat crow and didnt worry about saving face. I feel that the Harrison County Civil Defense is letting the casinos help drive their decisions.. That and some possible inexperience... The Keesler Air Force Base Emergency Management office ordered their Air Men and Women into shelters today and told them to either have their dependents out of housing and in shelters or have them evacuate... This came from Keesler Air Force Base at about 12 noon, while our County civil defense sat on their laurels and did nothing. This is going to a big issue for a very long time and someone will pay with their job IF any lives are lost due to the delay!!!
