The latest ground news from locations in the path of Dennis
I hope to continually update this as I have more info. Please feel free to add too.
*Fort Myers Beach has declared a state of emergency. Residents can get sandbags from their local fire stations.
*In Collier County... voluntary evacuations for persons living south or west of US 41. This includes all living in mobile homes. Some areas included are Everglade City, Isles of Capri, and Plantation Island.
* Naples pier will closing tonight @ 10.
*Glades County has a shelter on standby. It is the Maple Grove Baptist Church on St. Rd 78.
* Also, a lot of airlines at the SW Florida International Airport are waiving their change fee for now. The airport is still operating as normal.
*State Operations center in Tallahassee is operating at Level One.

There's a booming dark thunder cloud just north of Sanibel like the roiling cloud a UFO is hiding in in the movies.
We had a bullet rain downpour for 2 minutes an hour ago and now dry.
Hot and humid with blustery east breezes.
Have to force myself off the computer to do some better-safe-than-sorry preparations. (Very difficult with so much going on) Dennis is dangerous because an unexpected north turn leaves us little time in front of a dangerous storm...

* Hurricane Condition Four has been declared at Eglin Air Force Base by the 96th Air Base Wing commander because of the threat of Hurricane Dennis. Approximately 42 F-15 aircraft from the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin are being sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Here is what I know from NOLA:
*St. Bernard Parish has called for a voluntary evacuation beginning at 5 p.m.
*Jefferson Parish encouraging a voluntary evacuation of the parish, especially the areas of Grand Isle, Lafitte, Crown Point and Barataria.
*Terrebonne Parish issued a voluntary evacuation for areas south of the Intracoastal Waterway
*Plaquemines: voluntary evacuation beginning at 4:30 p.m.

*WKRG is Mobile is reporting that the Pensacola Regional Aiport Terminal will be closing @ 10 p.m. Saturday. They are also reporting mandatory evacuations for Gulf Shores.

State of Emergency Declared
July 8, 2005 11:45 a.m. PRESS RELEASE EVACUATIONS BEGIN HURRICANE DENNIS #2 In preparation for the potential landfall of Hurricane Dennis on Sunday, the Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners has declared a local state of emergency. The Commissioners have also begun procedures for evacuation. Voluntary evacuation begins at 1 p.m. on Friday with mandatory evacuation at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Evacuation orders include all coastal areas, all barrier islands, trailer parks, campgrounds and flood-prone areas. All evacuations should be completed by no later than 1 a.m. Sunday. Tolls will be suspended on the Mid-Bay Bridge at 6 a.m. on Saturday. However, all non-resident visitors are urged to evacuate immediately. The Okaloosa County Emergency Operations Center will to into partial activation at 1 p.m. today and will go to full activation as of 8:00 p.m. Saturday.
Coastal Hurlburt Field near Ft. Walton Beach has declared Hurcon 2 and ordered the mandatory evacuation of everyone except for ride out/recovery staff.

Gas is all but gone. The very few places that still have gas have block long lines. Ice is very hard to find. Traffic heading out of town is very heavy. Reports are coming in that I-65 is begining to backup (they need to open all four lanes for north bound traffic asap) Weather is hot, but skies are clear so people have good weather to prepare.
