So Dennis takes that record with 938 mb... now stronger than Charley, so that makes it the strongest hurricane this early in the season before Camille???

Working on that now...
While you wait, chew on this ....
the last time a pressure of 938 or lower was seen before September was 1996.

UMMM Audrey hit Cameron La. and killed over 500 due to flooding. I am sure Texas had effects too as Cameron is close to the border but Cameron is the official landfall spot.

Keep in mind that we really don't know how rare or how much of an oddity this really is because our records only go back 150 years or so.

Going back through 25 years... the earliest a storm has reached 938 millibars or lower was 1980 when Allen plunged through that mark on August 4. I'll let someone else either verify that Allen was the earliest or that there was one earlier...

ABC is wrong. Hurricane Audrey hit Texas as a Category 4 in June of 1957. I don't think any this strong in July, though...
It actually hit Cameron, Louisiana which is on the Texas border. I survived it. Over 500 dead and missing. The population of Cameron Parish (County) was a little over 5,000 at the time.

Think about all of those Spanish Galleons that were sunk by hurricanes in the 1500's. Those guys thought that since the seas were relatively calmer during the summer as opposed to the winter that they had a better chance of safe passage. Talk about Russian Roulette!! Think about one of those fleets headed back to Spain from Pensacola or Havana at this time 400 years ago. That is why the coast of Florida parts of the Caribbean are littered with old sunken Spanish gold fleets.

You are right, Hurricanehink! I re-reviewed and ABC did say "Never a US Sev 4 in July ..." and I incorrectly assumed they meant July or earlier. Sorry for the bad info.
