They aren't going to fly into the eye right now since its over the mountains...3000-6000 foot peaks.

They'll wait till it gets back over the carribbean sea.

I'm going to ask that people hold off on "commentary" posts a bit. We're hitting the server pretty hard and any load that we can take off would be appreciated :-)

When you need to fly at 1500 feet to get accurate wind and pressure measurements...then they are like the Alps!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but AF recon hasn't flown over Cuba today because of the restriction Cuba has placed on AF recon.

That would be my guess. Cuba is our enemy, we (The USA, and the UN) have economic sanctions in place, and they (Cuba, Fidel Castro especially) are very hostile to us. An Air Force plane of any kind would not be welcomed with open arms for sure :)

They can't fly over Cuba except Fidel gives them permission, remember, he governs the island, his own, private island.

By the way, the only time Fidel has given permission to fly over Cuban airspace was during Hurricane Ivan.

Well, in years past Cuba has restricted AF recon because they may be doing recon on more than just a tropical cyclone. However, they never had a problem with NOAA missions.

With that said, Cuba did allow AF mission to continue during Hurricane Ivan.

They fly that low, that seems very low to fly. I thought they flew in the top of the clouds.

Looks to be weakening, the eye is less defined and its heading towards the edge of the CDO.

Considering the eyewall just plowed through a mountain and part of the CDO is over land...I'm not surprised. I think Cuba weakens it to a Cat 2..maybe even down to a strong Cat 1. Its gona do some damage...
