Getting ill now

#1 Postby vespersparrow » Thu Jul 07, 2005 5:52 pm

Today I went to get gas. The prices here in Pensacola have risen in alot of places by at least 25 cents a gallon.
Then there are people filling up all kinds of things with gas.
When I got off work to fill my tank I had to go miles outta the way to get it. RVs are filling up. I mean, I understand its a first come and first serve and fight the wolves type situation right now and I am honestly sorry to say this but can't the tourists at least go home now?
We need the roads to get out after we are through with our prepping our homes. Many people need a hotel room that are residents here living in camper trailers and stuff.
Cut us a break?
Come back when its all over with and I'll even sit down and have a glass of iced tea with ya and maybe some fried chicken :P
But for now, the gas is almost gone, there are no rooms at the inn, I'm stuck here anyway being a nurse and all....but I guess I'm getting frustrated because I had to work taking care of someone's family member while they were out taking care of things on their homefront. Now there's barely anything left at all. Glad I'm prepped for the end of the world. But what about the old people? Or the really poor people that can't get out right now?
Not trying to cause arguments but man this really stinks right now.

I hope the tourists realize what is headed your way and get on the next flight/highway home. You are right..you guys don't need extra stress.

Hang in there, I know all of our prayers are coming that way.

I'm ill too, but from heat exhaustion. Temp here today 95 with 50% humidity. I was outside working on my car before work, and almost collapsed. Fortunately breeze from Cindy's remnants kicked up a couple of hours ago, made a big difference.

I share your pain with supplies: I work in the 5 pm until about 2 am, just in time for everyone to rush out and get supplies after they hear the local news while I'm at work, and leaving me with nothing. On top of that boss would let us work in a Cat 3 if we were willing (what I'm saying is he cares nothing about our safety, only his profits, and it is generally myself that calls the store closure due to weather conditions, and I'm not even the manager, just the head driver.)

Hope we aren't going through last years gas PRICE GOUGING again! I realized many months later when my fuel filter on my truck kept gunking up that last year when the gas got slim-pickins' that water had been added to the gas. Cost me some $$$ to get it all fixed. :grr:

I agree with the gas prices & the gouging. I stopped on my way home from work and half the pumps were out, lines, people filling up lawnmowers & landscaping equipment. What is that. I know we had a rough time on the east coast of fl. last year but still...I dread having another hurricane, but stop freaking out people. Gas went up at least 10 cents from this morning, maybe more depending on the station. Sigh....when will the madness end????

Guess what?

The people in Tampa may be getting ill tomorrow. Yesterday it was people in Mississippi. Why are you so ill? THE STORM IS NOT WITHIN 36hrs. OF LANDFALL IN YOUR AREA!

I guess I am supposed to feel wonderful today!

Just sit back and observe. Be prepared and ready, but for crying out loud, do be ill!

Thankfully, that's one problem we never have to worry about in Barbados because the price of gas is government controlled. To my knowledge, it's always been like that.

Gas prices are going up here as well... media reports say it's because of the oil refineries in the GOM being affected by Arlene and Cindy.

Here in eastern NC gas prices went up $0.14 today while I was at work. I expect that prices might jump again within the next two weeks.

Prices are jumping everywhere in part because the speculators are betting on the storm affecting oil prices.

Whether there is local price gouging going on in addition to the other price pressures, I don't know.

Well the truth is, two of the largest refineries in the south, just outside of New Orleans have been out of service since Tuesday about midnight and are still out, meaning no gasoline production. The report about prices being higher because of refineries being off line due to Cindy, is true. There will be additional shortages if another strom were to hit near New Orleans. When power is lost at a refinery, it takes quite a bit of time to come back on line. You just don't reset a breaker switch, and POOOF, everything is back running.

Shell refinery in Norco has

#13 Postby digitaldahling » Thu Jul 07, 2005 7:12 pm

The Shell refinery at Norco has been shut down since Cindy. They lost power, the coker choked up and they are not in production. The rigs in the gulf were evacuated and other refineries that may be in the path of Dennis are making preparations to shut down. That's why gas prices are rising. Supply and demand. Simple explanation. There's no hidden agenda by speculators.

I feel your pain, but don't assume that all the RVs are tourists. We lived in ours almost two weeks after Charley, three weeks total for the three storms. It has a generator, A/C, etc. and is a godsend after a storm. If in your area, I would have been one of those folks filling up, and anyone living in your area that has one would be smart to do the same thing. But I agree, if they are tourists, it's time to go home.

Let's not forget that oil prices have been flirting around $60 a barrel as well.

I won't say that demand might not be playing a role, as would reduced refinery capacity...but I suspect $60 a barrel oil has more to do with it than anything else.

I think you mean "Oil Storm", and yes, I watched it. However, there were a lot more problems that caused the crisis other than the hurricane scenario. For all of those things to take place would be very far-fetched. I do however realize that a hurricane hitting the oil industry and doing severe damage would be quite devastating.

thanks for the correction but ... signs are not looking good. Any kind of hiccup with oil production is going to basically sock it to the consumer.... ROYALLY

I work at a gasoline transport company assisting dispatch and I can tell you first hand that htis is causing MAJOR headaches with shortage of product. the problem is many stores dont take no for an answer and DEMAND that you keep them full. This while they also demand cheap fuel supply. Its a very stressful and thankless job osmetimes dealing with those assholes.
But htey do pay our bills and give us work so we have to at least try to serve them. RIght now though people are going through 9-15000 gallons a day at their stores, faster than we can resupply it.

They can demend all they want, if you've got no gas, they've got no gas, right! They might not take no for an answer, but if the fuel truck doesn't show up, what can they do?
