This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What is a Vort Max and what relationship does it have to the steering of Hurricanes.

A vort max is the highest value of positive vorticity inside an area of positive vorticity....which indicates an area of cyclonic turning in the atmosphere (a trough). The presence of a vort max means heights will be falling as the vort max moves through...so it allows for the recurvature or turning of a hurricane because of a weakening ridge.

Thanks, but if a trough is a 'ditch' of low pressure, I'm a little confused about the cyclonic turning part. I guess I will use Cindy as an example once well inland. If her tail created a trough, does that mean the vort max would be the center of circulation well inland?
