When are you all going to start preparing (other than the usual supplies) and what is everyone going to do?

I'm pretty prepared - all I have to do is shutter up and fuel up.

I have all my supplies except AA and AAA batteries (the wireless mouse and keyboard keep eating them). Tomorrow I'll gather insurance documents and other important things that I'd throw in the car to evacuate with.

Guess a few more bottles of water in the freezer couldn't hurt, either.

preparation.....

#6 Postby manofsteele79 » Wed Jul 06, 2005 10:06 pm

I'm not on the coast, but about 50-60 miles inland (Hattiesburg). I'm going to wait until Friday evening to make any serious preparations. My parents live 20 miles inland of the Alabama Coast and after seeing what Ivan did as a cat 3 everyone should be ready to go no later than Friday evening on the coast. If you don't have a generator and you can afford one..... buy it NOW. Those things will be long gone as soon as warnings come out. I almost never found one for my parents.

Same. It's still a LOOONNGGG way off and, as often stated, "[t]he safest place to be is at the end of an NHC 5 day forecast track".

If it's looking the same around Sunday evening, I'll start boarding up, so that's a long waaaay off.

I think Sunday evening is too late to be boarding up (if the track remains the same) ...I'm just trying to plan for Fri/Sat.

What happens is the Lowes and Home Depot stores take them off the shelves on the inland stores and move them to the coast. If you have friends and family close, keep an eye out and the stores will get more. Today Home Depot had several portables all the way to 15 kW but they'll get moved to some coastal area by Friday.

Well my fellow Mississippians (and Louisianaians, Alabamians, and Floridians), I'm going to bed. I suggest you do too!

Sleep will be few and far between for some of us for the next few days.

To me Friday is the important day for everyone in the GOM. I think by Friday the models will have a pretty good handle on this hurricane. You may have an outlier but I think they will be in pretty good agreement by then. Once the hurricane moves into a data rich environment.

You're right. I didn't get a good look at the time/location forecast. Predawn Sunday morning ought to be plenty early enough. I just have a LOT of big windows to board and I'd absolutely want to avoid it if possible.

I'm headed to Wally Word tomorrow to stock up. I'll start to panic when Dennis enters the gulf and still on track for a central GOM coast.....MGC
