Yes have a plan in place, but wait until Hurricane Warnings before you actually evacuate or buy things.

Yes they should.

If you saw all the people I did after Ivan that were not prepared in advance and were without food, water and gas you would agree that you need to be prepared in advance (like NOW) for this or any hurricane this season. I remember the mile long lines to the FEMA aide stations. I remember the long lines to the few gas stations that opened DAYS after the storm. I remember going to the grocery store and wiating in line for Ice a WEEK!!! after Ivan. If you do not prepare now you may find yourself SOL after Dennis. We did not have power for 14 days after Ivan. Are you ready for that!!!

Hurricane Warning gives you plenty of time to buy food, water, and to evacuate if needed. Make a plan but wait for the hurricane warning to put it into motion.

What is bad about GOM Hurricanes, is that they are never fish! Somebody has to get affected no matter what.

There are a grand total of two places that are good places for a GOMEX landfall, and since Southeast of Tallahassee looks like a "no", it seems like the best track would be another Hurricane Bret/ middle of nowhere Texas situation. Every place else has too many people.

As for gas, keep those tanks topped off even if you're well inland. My area was spared the worst of Ivan, and got the power back on quickly, but we had gas supply problems for a couple weeks after the storm because normal refueling to gas stations was so disrupted.

I guess I better leave the lawn chairs and the umbrella and stuff in the garage. Maybe move them out of the way of my hurricane boards......

Right, it's always smart to be digging for bread crumbs at the store and crying because no water is left while others who prepared in advance are currently evacuating themselves.

Be my guest and wait, but please do not tell others that they should NOT prepare in advance as if you are some voice of authority.

Earthstormfire-What horrible advice. I have two children to protect, and I already have a good supply, but plan to get more tommorrow. What do I tell my hungry children if I wait until the last minute and there are no supplies left. And I will not wait until the last minute to leave. I could not forgive myself if my children were stuck in a major hurricane because I missed the window of opprotunity to get them out.

I am sorry if it is a crime to wish you could get a hurricane. We don't get hurricanes were I live. I want to experience the excitement and the trill of being in one.

There is no thrill

#52 Postby r_u_stuck2 » Wed Jul 06, 2005 9:04 pm

I have been through Opal, Erin, Ivan. There is no thrill or excitement of being in a Hurricane. There is fear and uncertainty.

I normally do not post on these boards but The poster Earthwindfire is a complete idiot. Kick me off the boards, ban me, whatever. When you live through several of these you will learn that there is not any thing pleasant or rewarding or exciting or thrilling.

People who do not know this are immature.

Its not a crime and it does not even bother me that you wish to see one, but when you put things on this board that could be and I stress COULD be taken as advice from someone who knows and that advice is faulty and even downright dangerous we/I must respond. If you want to see a cane close up jump on a plane and head down to the Gulf coast I figure we will be having a nasty one in the next few days.
Tim

BTW I am not flaming just stating my opinion.

Please do not follow this advise. Be prepared in advance. If you wait until warnings are posted you will be fighting for the leftovers where ever you go. Its already getting hard to find large gas cans here in Pensacola. Two gas staions I passed were out of regular gas. By the time warning are posted you'll be lucky to find ice, propane, bread, etc. I know, I've lived this.

I have been through 4 tornados, 1 hurricane and some tropical storms, and I can say they were all exciting, from a weather freaks standpoint. Yes, they are all bad in the human respect, but the awe of mother natures wrath is an awesome event. To call that immature I think is hasty, but, oh well, those who actually enjoy severe weather are constantly chastized...

I agree with you loon but you still don't post things about not preparing. There is nothing wrong with the thrill and excitment a storm brings as long as you remember the human cost as well.

The entire gulf should be ready for this monster. Especially the eastern side. This thing is huge.
Regardless, get ready wherever you are at.

You lose billions of dollars because people prepare early. If no one prepared early then you wouldn't have to worry about scraps. The ideal situation would be if everyone waited until hurricane warnings to prepare that way people who need the supplies the most get it.
