President Bush collides with Scottish police officer on bike

#1 Postby HurryKane » Wed Jul 06, 2005 3:02 pm

Apparently Pres. Bush was going at "a good clip" on his own bike when he ran into a police officer. Just a few bumps and scrapes, but CNN considered it breaking news. The popo has been taken to the hospital as a precaution.

That's what we call the police down here in Mississippi :) "Here come the popo, better hide that open container!" (pronounced "Poh-Poh")

Bush was treated and bandaged by a White House doctor.

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) - President Bush collided with a local police officer and fell during a bike ride on the grounds of the Gleneagles golf resort while attending a meeting of world leaders Wednesday. Bush suffered scrapes on his hands and arms that required bandages by the White House physician, said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
The police officer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, McClellan said. The extent of the officer's injuries was not known, but he might have an ankle injury, the spokesman said.

It was raining lightly at the time.

The officer was on a security detail. He is a member of the police department of Strathclyde, a nearby town, McClellan said.

The president was concerned about the officer's condition, and talked with him for some time after the collision, McClellan said. The president also asked White House physician Richard Tubb to monitor the officer's condition at the hospital.

The fall did not affect the president's schedule. Dressed in a tuxedo, he attended a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth at the annual Group of Eight economic summit. He showed no signs of distress.

I thought the same thing! What a way to celebrate it. I'm glad that both are alright.

Glad both are alright...and because W and I are the same age, nice that he had a "brush with the law on a bike" instead of falling out of his wheelchair.

Being close to newspaper journalism all these years makes me really want to write the headline for this accident.

Sounds like the pres had the class to show concern for the officer, unlike SOME people who blame the other person for being in the way.

Wasn't that the second bike mishap that Bush has had?

year ago, Bush was cut and bruised when he sailed over the handlebars while riding a mountain bike at his Texas ranch.

In 2003, he tried out a Segway, the standup, motorized scooter at the family's seaside estate in Maine. It went down on his first attempt, but he stayed on his feet with a flying leap over the machine. Undeterred, he got on again and cruised around the driveway with his father.

When he was governor of TX and just beginning his presidential bid, a garbage truck overturned while he was jogging around Town Lake in Austin. I think he fell boom then, too. Wasn't injured-- but it was apparently messy.

You'd think he'd take the hint and become a couch potato!

Well, I'm a very klutzky type person, like this. I've wrecked my bike looking at houses, for landscaping ideas or paint color choices, completely missing a curb. I've twisted my ankles so many times over the years. Now I'm just very careful and I skip the bike. I walk for exercise but I rarely look up, I look down. If I'm with someone, I do not look at their face as we're talking, I watch for curb changes, etc. and I explain I'm not being rude, just very careful. My kids tease me big time. But these are the things George W. Bush needs to start doing - one foot in front of the other, looking down. Give that bike away! Or put it into some Presidential Museum display....LOL

It is a wonder these accidents keep happening. I guess Laura can only suggest so much. We all know how she's worked wonders on his speaking abilities....;-)
