Not in the least......same effects....minimal wind damge, tons of rain!!!

Some people may take a hurricane more seriously than a tropical storm.

It doesn't do much in terms of effects, but it does mean the difference in how verification goes at the end of the season.

I agree...but there has been no reports of sustained 1 minute winds of cane strength...just a few gusts....thus...it may be close...but it isnt....so the classification is not wrong in actuality

Of course it does, why do you think there are classifications based on pressures and wind speed. Wind damage just like earthquake damage is due to the exponential force brought on by the increasing magnitude whether it be wind or earthquakes. It definitely makes a difference, ask anyone in the Navy how it affects the sea alone. So to answer your question. YES!

I do agree with you, if all we have is gust reports and no evidence of sustained then its not a hurricane, however we must err on the side of caution. 992 certainly supports Min. Cat 1 status.

The damage potential is roughly the same. Only the classification is different

is a very good point! Around here today, everybody and everything was (and still is) business as usual. If **IF** things get hairy tonight and some folks lose their boats, etc., it may well be because they heard "Tropical Storm" instead of "Hurricane". Certainly in the past when we've had minimal storms approach (at 74mph), the reaction was much more significant and people reacted with a lot more urgency... Guess the aftermath tomorrow will tell the story one way or the other.
