I've never understood that...

I've also noticed the NWS sites are usually the last place to have updated things. I get warnings text a lot faster from other places.

I dunna...wonder the same thing. I guess the NHC sends out all the guidance, intensity, advisory, etc data all at once in text format. Then all the weather outlets pick that up and format it. NHC then posts it to the web themselves once they distribute the info.

I could be wrong, just a thought.

The advisories are usually released into the data stream well before
their "scheduled" time. The NHC is going to try and post them
"on time", others will post them ASAP.

So when there is a correction, and they do happen, the NHC has time
to fix it before its posted, and others have to change what they released.

I think the computers do it. All the computer has to do is plot the points on their graphics with the current info and it's done. It seems to be automatic since it's posted the moment the Marine Advisory is.

Because, whoever has it first will get the weenies like us to go there. I go to wunderground 30 minutes before a scheduled advisory and wait for it, I know it'll be there before NHC.

A few years ago (can't remember the year) the NHC website became overwhelmed and they were forced to switch to text only site. I think it was the same year that wunderground was used as a mirror site.

Another poster rightly said that the information is in the stream long before the official releas time. The NHC posts on time while the rest of us who have access to this stream then to post immediately.

wunderground uses the NOAAPORT satellite. At 1.5Mb downstream, they are obtaining the data faster than the ftp sites. Sometimes this can occur up to 10 minutes faster than the servers can be populated. As a funny aside, most of the NWS servers (if not all) around the nation are also populated via NOAAPORT. Seems like the NHC should use their own satellite feed!

The Weather Channel has direct "Server Level Access" at $54,000 per year. Still not faster than NOAAPORT.

Not sure what accuwx is using, but it is likely direct server access.

OH NO Jax, I know you just didnt spam on Government workers like that! I'm a government employee and granted I get paid well for what I do and get some pretty good benefits, but by no means am I a slacker. I may have to put up with more beaurucratic red tape then some employees but I'm glad too for the job security. There is no doubt about it Government jobs are usually very good jobs and I work hard to keep mine! :D
