This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Longest tropical system coastal stall?

#1 Postby HurryKane » Mon Jul 04, 2005 1:28 pm

I know just because the MM5 shows TD3 sitting on TX/LA for three days doesn't mean it's twue :)

But my question is this: what's the longest any tropical system--storm or hurricane--has stalled on (i.e. prolonged landfall) or just off the coast immediately prior to landfall?

TS Dennis in 1981 sat smack in the middle of the Everglades for three days, IIRC. Dumped over 30 inches rain total in my neighborhood.

Even though Allison was onshore, would almost have to include her.

Hurricane Dennis in 1999 was very very strange. It was going to hit North Carolina but then turned away at the last moment, weakened into a tropical storm and then slammed into Virginia.

Very interesting storm.

Some more info:
Hurricane Dennis was a relatively small hurricane that diminished in strength prior to hitting land. However, the storm lingered off the coast of North Carolina for about a week, generating high waves and causing extensive damage in coastal areas of North and South Carolina and Virginia.

I think Dennis wins the prize.

Danny sat over or around Mobile Bay for the better part of 3 days in '97, dumping up to 42 inches of rain in some places (according to Doppler estimates). The streets were like rivers. Georges was also a slow mover.

TS Allison stalled over TX in '89, also dumping up to 40 inches of rain.
