August 2005

Pleasant. Thunderstorms Arkansas, followed by clearing. Hurricane threat Gulf Coast, then fair. 20th-23rd. Fair, then showers. 24th-27th. Fair again gives way to unsettled. 28th-31st. Thunderstorms Southern Plains through Texas east.

Some of you may not even rely on the Farmers Almanac but I know it has been around for many years and widely used to plant crops, best times and days for fishing and last years almanac I still have and it was right on target with the storms that hit FL. It typically doesn't just point straight to a particular area but does give some general info. At least enough heads up to prepare for the worst. The book is much better than the website. (AND it was right on target with snow/ice have gotten here in NC last winter.) Did you know the Farmers Almanac is written and printed 2 years prior to being placed on the shelves of stores? That's really cool that it can be that accurate that they can produce it so early on.

Alright, see ya on the flip side...

I buy it every year as well and the "Hurricane" forecast for the MidAtlantic for September stood out for me as well!

There are times when I've noticed it's been right on for my area and other times it hasn't been. Last year's did not mention one hurricane for the Florida coasts or the Gulf. Perhaps it's a year or so off.

It remains to be seen what does occur, but I for one do enjoy reading it for all of the different articles and for the potential weather we may or may not have this year.

That's not what my OF Almanac says.

#5 Postby jimvb » Mon Jul 04, 2005 6:56 pm

My Old Farmer's Almanac does not say "July 20-23 Hurricane". It says "Sept 4-7, Hurricane" for the Southeast. Here is what it says for July:

July 2005
1-8 Seasonable; scattered t-storms. 9-17 Warm, humid; sunny north, t-storms south. 18-21 Very warm, showers. 22-25 Tropical storm. 26-31, Very warm, t-storms.

Instead of a hurricane on the 20-23rd, it calls for a "tropical storm" on the 22-25th.

I have the Southern Edition, but if the OF Almanac forecasts depend on which bound set of papers you happen to be reading from, I can see why these forecasts are not reliable.

I'll go out on a limb and guess they mention that "snow storms threaten the East coast" in January.
