model graphics, now you have to pay?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

model graphics, now you have to pay?

#1 Postby windsurfertx » Sat Jul 02, 2005 2:50 pm

For the past 5 years or so, we used to get a graphical map of the combined models forecast. But now it seems you have to subscribe to get it, about $23 a year. Is that correct? I think we were getting it from something associated with WREL on the east coast. Is there anywhere else to get it?

thanks

Yes, it's now a subscription item. http://WWW.midatlanticwx.com
Personally I think it's great but you can hunt around and find the same information on the net for free. I'd rather pay the money Scott does a wonderful job and his business is entitled to make a few bucks on it.

He is not even breaking even though :( It is an enormous cost to run a website with high loads of traffic on a good hosting company.

I'll chip in here...

I grabbed a subscription around the beginning of the season and after seeing a handful of invests already, which two went on to become tropical storms, paying the low price for this model data is certainly worth it.

I know Scott has mentioned a few times that is isn't something he wished to do, but with the high traffic to his site and the costs of maintaining servers and whatnot, it was just too much.

They are great maps and well worth it.

Sometime back, Scott explained why he's having to charge, and I am
certain he's not profiting, but just tying to revoer the costs for server,
bandwidth, and such.

Working with IT, especially Enterprise level IT, on the sales and support side is my chosen profession. I can vouch not just for the cost of infrastructure to put a High-use Web Server in place, but the ongoing cost of keeping the thing running. I do not begrudge him asking users to help him support the cost. The site is an excellant compilation of information and is worth the small fee to help maintain it.

The posts or stuff said are NOT an official forecast and my opinion alone. Please look to the NHC and NWS for official forecasts and products.

Model Runs Cheat Sheet:
GFS (5:30 AM/PM, 11:30 AM/PM)
HWRF, GFDL, UKMET, NAVGEM (6:30-8:00 AM/PM, 12:30-2:00 AM/PM)
ECMWF (1:45 AM/PM)
TCVN is a weighted averaged

Opinions my own.
